Old Boston, Texas
Old Boston is an unincorporated community located in Bowie County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 100 in 2000. It is located within the Texarkana metropolitan area. History Old Boston was settled in the early 1830s and named for store owner W. J. Boston. It was selected as the county seat of the newly formed county in 1841. A post office was established at Old Boston in 1846 with LD Vandike as postmaster. Old Boston became a thriving farm community and was home to several wealthy planters who lived on the Red River. Its population zenith was reported to be between 300 and 400 during the 1860s. In 1876, the Texas and Pacific Railway passed four miles north of Old Boston, prompting a population shift to the tracks, forming the community of New Boston. New Boston, Texas
New Boston is a city in Bowie County, Texas, Bowie County, Texas, United States. Boston was named for an early storekeeper in the settlement, W.J. Boston. The coming of the railroads led to the location of two more Bostons. A depot was built about four miles north of Boston and was named New Boston. The original Boston then became Old Boston. The courthouse was moved to Texarkana in the early 1880s but a later election carried to move the courthouse back to the geographic center of the county. This location was between the Bostons. Texas State Highway 8
State Highway 8 (SH 8) is a north–south state highway that runs from the Red River, the Texas-Arkansas boundary, north of New Boston to SH 155 at Linden. History SH 8 was one of the original twenty five state highways on June 21, 1917, proposed as an 'East Texas Highway.' In 1919 the routing follows the present day SH 8 from the Arkansas State Line to its terminus in Linden, then continued south on present day U.S. Highway 59 through Marshall, to Carthage. On U.S. Highway 96, SH 8 traveled through San Augustine, Jasper to its junction with SH 62, where it turned towards to its terminus in Port Arthur. On August 21, 1922 SH 8 was rerouted from Buna to Beaumont and into Port Arthur via present day US 96. Mexican Texas
Mexican Texas is the historiographical name used to refer to the era of Texan history between 1821 and 1836, when it was part of Mexico. Mexico gained independence in 1821 after winning its war against Spain, which began in 1810. Initially, Mexican Texas operated similarly to Spanish Texas. Ratification of the 1824 Constitution of Mexico created a federal structure, and the province of Tejas was joined with the province of Coahuila to form the state of Coahuila y Tejas. In geography, the centroid of the two-dimensional shape of a region of the Earth's surface (projected radially to sea level or onto a geoid surface) is known as its geographic centre or geographical centre or (less commonly) gravitational centre. Boston is an unincorporated community in and the county seat of Bowie County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 200 in 2000. It is part of the Texarkana metropolitan area. History In the mid-1880s, as the population of (Old) Boston declined, citizens of Texarkana successfully moved the county seat to their city in the extreme east of the county. Within five years, citizens of central and western Bowie County successfully proposed moving the county seat closer to the geographic center of the county. The new community began in 1890 with the construction of the County Courthouse, one mile south of New Boston and three miles north of the original Boston. Texas And Pacific Railway
The Texas and Pacific Railway Company (known as the T&P) was created by federal charter in 1871 with the purpose of building a southern transcontinental railroad between Marshall, Texas, and San Diego, California. History Under the influence of General Buell the TPRR was originally to be gauge, but this was overturned when the state legislature passed a law requiring gauge. The T&P had a significant foothold in Texas by the mid-1870s. Construction difficulties delayed westward progress, until American financier Jay Gould acquired an interest in the railroad in 1879. The T&P never reached San Diego; instead it met the Southern Pacific at Sierra Blanca, Texas, in 1881. The Missouri Pacific Railroad, also controlled by Gould, leased the T&P from 1881 to 1885 and continued a cooperative relationship with the T&P after the lease ended.
