Olavi Virta (originally to 1926 Oskari Olavi Ilmén) (27 February 1915 in Sysmä, Grand Duchy of Finland – 14 July 1972 in Pispala, Tampere, Finland) was a Finnish singer, acclaimed during his time as the "King" of Finnish tango. Between 1939 and 1966 he recorded almost 600 songs, many of which are classics of Finnish popular music, and appeared in many films and theatrical productions. Olavi Uusivirta
Olavi Uusivirta (born 28 July 1983 in Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish rock/pop singer, songwriter and actor. Childhood and education Before his school years Uusivirta moved with his parents first to Kotka and later to Karkkila due to his mother's work. At the end of elementary school he started guitar and piano lessons. He also attended art classes and a theatre club that his mother directed. In 1995 he attended the Mustikkamaa midsummer festival in Helsinki where young Uusivirta saw Ismo Alanko perform. This performance inspired him and guided his life more towards music and performing. Olavi Hänninen
Olavi Tapio Hänninen (14 December 1920, in Lapinlahti – 16 June 1992 in Espoo) was a Finnish designer and interior architect. Olavi Hänninen's design projects ranged from furniture to trams and church silverware, including total interior designs for many public facilities. His modernist designs also included tables and chairs, and he was well recognized for his work on the Palace Hotel interiors together with Antti Nurmesniemi and Olli Borg. Hänninen designed a renowned plastic chair with metal structure for the hotel's café. In the 1970s, his designs included the new Valmet Nr I trams for Helsinki City Transport. Before starting his own design office in 1961, Hänninen worked at architect Viljo Revell's offices in the early 1950s, where one of his tasks was to design selected interiors for the Palace Hotel building completed in 1952. Kauko Olavi Ahonen (21 July 1923 in Tikkakoski – 1 September 2000 in Helsinki, Finland) was a Finnish film actor. Ahonen first appeared in film in 1954 and made many appearances in Finnish film between then and 1997. He also appeared in many films by Spede Pasanen. From 1990 he only appeared on TV in Finland until his retirement in 1997. He died in 2000. Olavi Salonen (born 20 December 1933 in Noormarkku) is a Finnish athlete. He is a former world record holder of men's 1500-metre run. Biography Salonen participated the Summer Olympic Games in 1500 m. in 1960 and 1964. Olavi Paavolainen
Olavi Paavolainen (17 September 1903 – 19 July 1964) was a Finnish writer, essayist and poet. He was one of the prominent figures of the literary group Tulenkantajat (″The Flame Bearers″), and one of the most influential Finnish writers of the inter-war period. Paavolainen started his poetry career in the literary magazine '' Nuori Voima''. Paavolainen was interested in Fascism and National Socialism, but after the World War II he turned to the political left. Paavolainen's notable works include the 1936 travel report '' Kolmannen valtakunnan vieraana'' (″A Guest of the Third Reich″) and the 1946 ''Synkkä yksinpuhelu'' (″A Gloomy Soliloquy″), based on his war diaries. Olavi Alakulppi
Olavi Eelis Alakulppi (17 July 1915 – 19 August 1990) was a Finnish military officer and cross-country skier. Life and career Alakulppi was born in Rovaniemi, Finland, to Elis and Senja Alakulppi (née Törmänen). Alakulppi served in the Finnish Army during the Winter War and the Continuation War. In 1942, he was awarded the Mannerheim Cross. In 1945, in order to evade prosecution for his involvement in the Weapons Cache Case, he skied to Sweden and arranged for his wife Eevi, their son Vesa, and him to travel to the United States, where he joined the United States Army. He then fought in the Korean War, and served in South Korea, Japan, and West Germany. Vesa Juhani Alakulppi eventually followed his father into the military and was killed in action during the Vietnam War. Alakulppi retired from the US Army in 1968 as a lieutenant-colonel. Mauno Olavi Laiho (1907 – 2 September 1944) was the last Finn to be executed in Finland. Early life Olavi Laiho was born the son of a farmhand in Halikko, Finland. He was introduced to communism very early on, and was an active member of the underground Finnish Communist Party. He moved to Turku, where he worked as a construction worker. Laiho was active in sports. Military service During the Continuation War, Laiho was conscripted into the Finnish Army as a private. Laiho deserted and moved to a clandestine hideaway near Turku, where he worked actively as a spy for the Soviet Union and as an aide for other deserters. Capture, trial and execution Laiho was caught in early 1944 and sentenced to death by military court for desertion, espionage and high treason. Olavi Juhani Mäenpää (29 November 1950 – 31 January 2018) was a Finnish politician and former chairperson of the Finnish People's Blue-Whites (''Suomen Kansan Sinivalkoiset, SKS''), a political party aligned with the far-right. He was born in Tyrvää, which later became a part of Sastamala. Mäenpää was a member of the City Council of Turku, his home city, from the beginning of 1993 until he lost his seat in the 2017 election. Matti Olavi "Ola" Tuomi (22 May 1932 – 14 November 2006) was a Finnish cinematographer, chief lighting technician and actor. Tuomi started to work for Suomen Filmiteollisuus at the age of 15. His first major work was being one of the cinematographers of the Edvin Laine film '' The Unknown Soldier'' (1955). He continued to work for Laine both as a cinematographer and an assistant director up until the end of Laine's career.
