The October Revolution,. officially known as the Great October Socialist Revolution. in the Soviet Union, also known as the Bolshevik Revolution, was a revolution in Russia led by the Bolshevik Party of Vladimir Lenin that was a key moment in the larger Russian Revolution of 1917–1923. It was the second revolutionary change of government in Russia in 1917. It took place through an armed insurrection in Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg) on . It was the precipitating event of the Russian Civil War. The October Revolution followed and capitalized on the February Revolution earlier that year, which had overthrown the Tsarist autocracy, resulting in a liberal provisional government. Filipp Oktyabrsky
Filipp Sergeyevich Oktyabrsky (russian: Филипп Серге́евич Октябрьский, real surname: Ivanov - Иванов; – 8 July 1969, Sevastopol) was a Soviet naval commander. He began service in the Baltic Fleet in 1918. From 1925–27 he studied at the Naval Academy in Leningrad. As vice-admiral he was given command of the Black Sea Fleet in March 1939 and headed its actions during the Sieges of Sevastopol (1941-1942) and Odessa (1941). After the war he became a Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, commander of all naval test centres and from 1957 to 1960 head of the Black Sea Higher Naval Institute "Admiral Pavel Nakhimov" ( ru , Черноморское высшее военно-морское училище имени П. Soviet Cruiser Admiral Oktyabrsky
''Admiral Oktyabrsky'' () was a Project 1134A Berkut A (NATO reporting name Kresta II)-class cruiser of the Soviet Navy, which briefly became part of the Russian Navy. The sixth ship of her class, the ship served mostly during the Cold War, from 1973 to 1993. She served with the Pacific Fleet for the duration of her career, often operating in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific in order to show the flag. ''Admiral Oktyabrsky'' cruised in the Indian and the Pacific Oceans during 1974, 1977, and 1978, spending a year in refit until late 1979. She returned to the Indian Ocean in 1980 and underwent a lengthy refit between 1982 and 1986, before being sent to the Persian Gulf in 1990. Due to reduced naval funding, the cruiser was decommissioned in 1993 before being sold for scrap. Mariya Oktyabrskaya
Mariya Vasilyevna Oktyabrskaya (russian: Мария Васильевна Октябрьская; 16 August 1905 – 15 March 1944) was a Soviet tank driver and mechanic who fought on the Eastern Front against Nazi Germany during World War II. After her husband was killed fighting in 1941, Oktyabrskaya sold her possessions to donate a tank for the war effort, and requested that she be allowed to drive it. She received and was trained to drive and fix a T-34 medium tank, which she named "Fighting Girlfriend" (""). Oktyabrskaya proved her ability and bravery in battle, and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. After she died of wounds from battle in 1944, she was posthumously made a Hero of the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union's highest honor for bravery during combat. She was the first female tank driver to be awarded the title. Early life Oktyabrskaya was born into a poor Ukrainian family on the Crimean Peninsula. She was one of ten children.
