Okolona, Arkansas
Okolona is a town near the western edge of Clark County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 147 at the 2010 census. The Battle of Elkin's Ferry of the Civil War was fought here during April 3–4, 1864, as a part of the Camden Expedition. Union forces, led by Maj. Gen. Fred Steele, sought to ford the Little Missouri River, as the local roads were impassable. The force reached Elkin's Ferry before the Confederate cavalry brigades, led by Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke, and the Confederates were defeated. Okolona has several churches; the Saint Clair Baptist Church, Okolona Baptist Church, Okolona First United Methodist Church, and Center Grove United Methodist Church. Geography Okolona is located in western Clark County at (34.000589, -93.337362). Arkansas Highway 51 passes through the community, leading northeast to Arkadelphia, the county seat, and south to Interstate 30. Okolona, Louisville
Okolona is a former census-designated place (CDP) in southern Louisville/ Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. It is centered on the intersection of Preston Highway and the Outer Loop. The population was 17,807 at the 2000 census. When the government of Jefferson County merged with the city of Louisville, Kentucky in 2003, residents of Okolona also became citizens of ''Louisville Metro''. As a result, Okolona is said to be a neighborhood within the city limits of Louisville. It was first settled by farmers from Pennsylvania and Virginia in the late 18th century. It was called Lone Oak in the late 19th century. However, a town near Paducah, Kentucky already claimed that name for its post office, so the town rearranged the words into ''Okolona''. Farming, as well as logging and charcoal production were important industries around this time. Okolona, Mississippi
Okolona is a city in and one of the two county seats of Chickasaw County, Mississippi, United States. It is located near the eastern border of the county. The population was 2,692 at the 2010 census. History Okolona was named as Rose Hill in 1845 early in its settlement, but residents later discovered that another location had this name. When a US post office was established here in 1850, a new name was needed to avoid confusion in mail delivery. According to the Okolona Area Chamber of Commerce, Colonel Josiah N. Walton, postmaster of nearby Aberdeen, Mississippi, remembered an encounter with a Chickasaw warrior years earlier. The man's name was ''Oka-laua,'' meaning peaceful, yellow, or blue water. Walton renamed Rose Hill as Okolona in his honor. Due to the destruction brought to the area by the Civil War, few structures from the antebellum period remain.
