Oil City Armory
Oil City Armory is a historic National Guard armory located at Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1914, and consists of a two-story administration section with a taller two-story drill hall in a Late Victorian style. The administration section has a taller three-story, corner, polygonal office tower with Gothic-influenced window surrounds. The drill hall measures 70 by 72 feet and has a roof supported by Pratt trusses. Oil City is a city in Venango County, Pennsylvania known for its prominence in the initial exploration and development of the petroleum industry. It is located at a bend in the Allegheny River at the mouth of Oil Creek. Initial settlement of Oil City was sporadic, and tied to the iron industry. Venango County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 50,454. Its county seat is Franklin. The county was created in 1800 and later organized in 1805. Venango County comprises the Oil City, PA micropolitan statistical area. It is part of the Pittsburgh media market. History Shortly afterward, Rogers met oil pioneer Charles Pratt, who purchased the entire output of the tiny Wamsutta Oil Refinery. In 1867, Rogers joined Pratt in forming Charles Pratt and Company, which was purchased by Standard Oil in 1874. Rogers became one of the key men in John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Trust.
