Ohavi Zedek
Ohavi Zedek (Hebrew for "Lovers of Justice") is a Conservative congregation and synagogue located at 188 North Prospect Street, in Burlington, Vermont, in the United States. History Founded in 1876, it is the oldest Jewish congregation in Vermont. The synagogue's original building, Old Ohavi Zedek Synagogue, a brick Gothic Revival structure erected in 1885, is among the oldest synagogue buildings still standing in the United States. The building, at the corner of Archibald and Hyde Streets in Burlington, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The congregation moved to its present location on North Prospect Street in 1952. The Archibald Street building is now occupied by Congregation Ahavath Gerim. In 2019, the building was vandalized with inflammatory posters by Patriot Front. Conservative Judaism
Conservative Judaism, known as Masorti Judaism outside North America, is a Jewish religious movement which regards the authority of ''halakha'' (Jewish law) and traditions as coming primarily from its people and community through the generations moreso than from any divine revelation. It therefore views ''halakha'' as both binding and subject to historical development. The Conservative rabbinate employs modern historical-critical research, rather than only traditional methods and sources, and lends great weight to its constituency when determining its stance on matters of practice. The movement considers its approach as the authentic and most appropriate continuation of ''halakhic'' discourse, maintaining both fealty to received forms and flexibility in their interpretation. Patriot Front is an American white nationalist and neo-fascist hate group. Part of the broader alt-right movement, the group split off from the neo-Nazi organization Vanguard America in the aftermath of the Unite the Right rally in 2017. Patriot Front's aesthetic combines traditional Americana with fascist symbolism. The group reportedly had between 200 and 300 members as of late 2021. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the group generated 82% of reported incidents in 2021 involving distribution of racist, antisemitic, and other hateful propaganda in the United States, comprising 3,992 incidents in every state except Hawaii and Alaska.
