The Office for Women is an office within the Australian Government "to deliver policies and programmes to advance gender equality and improve the lives of Australian women". History In March 1983, the Office of Women's Affairs changed its name to the Office of the Status of Women. Susan Ryan was the first federal Australian Labor Party (ALP) female minister, appointed as Minister for Education and Youth Affairs and Minister assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women in Bob Hawke’s first ministry in 1983. Susan Ryan
Susan Maree Ryan (10 October 194227 September 2020) was an Australian politician and public servant. She was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and held ministerial office in the Hawke Government as Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women (1983–1988), Minister for Education and Youth Affairs (1983–1984), Minister for Education (1984–1987) and Special Minister of State (1987–1988). She was the first woman from the ALP to serve in cabinet and was notably involved in the creation of the ''Sex Discrimination Act 1984'' and the ''Affirmative Action (Equal Opportunities in Employment) Act 1986''. Robert James Lee Hawke (9 December 1929 – 16 May 2019) was an Australian politician and union organiser who served as the 23rd prime minister of Australia from 1983 to 1991, holding office as the leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Previously he served as the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions from 1969 to 1980 and president of the Labor Party national executive from 1973 to 1980. Sex Discrimination Act 1984
The ''Sex Discrimination Act 1984'' is an Act of the Parliament of Australia which prohibits discrimination on the basis of mainly sexism, homophobia, transphobia and biphobia, but also sex, marital or relationship status, actual or potential pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status or breastfeeding in a range of areas of public life. These areas include work, accommodation, education, the provision of goods, facilities and services, the activities of clubs and the administration of Commonwealth laws and programs. John Howard
