Office For Product Safety And Standards
The Office for Product Safety and Standards is part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy of the Government of the United Kingdom, responsible for the safety of consumer products, and the regulation of measurement standards. Role The OPSS was created in January 2018 from the Regulatory Delivery directorate of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. OPSS is the regulator for all consumer products in the United Kingdom, except for vehicles (regulated by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency), medicines (the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and food (the Food Standards Agency). The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom, UK Department for Transport (DfT). It carries out driving tests, approves people to be driving instructors and MOT testers, carries out tests to make sure lorries and buses are safe to drive, carries out roadside checks on drivers and vehicles, and monitors vehicle recalls. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is an executive agency of the Department of Health and Social Care in the United Kingdom which is responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work and are acceptably safe. The Standards Department was a department of the English Board of Trade having the custody of the imperial standards of weights and measures. History As far back as can be traced, the standard weights and measures, the primary instruments for determining the justness of all other weights and measures used in the United Kingdom, were kept at the Exchequer, and the duties relating to these standards were imposed upon the chamberlains of the Exchequer.
