Offaly West (; sometimes spelled ''Ophaly'') is a barony in County Kildare, Ireland. Etymology Offaly West takes its name from the Kingdom of Uí Failghe. It is not to be confused with County Offaly. Location Offaly West is located in west County Kildare, east of the River Barrow. History Offaly West were part of the ancient lands of the Ua Conchobhair Failghe (O'Connor Faly). In Ireland, a barony ( ga, barúntacht, plural ) is a historical subdivision of a county, analogous to the hundreds into which the counties of England were divided. Baronies were created during the Tudor reconquest of Ireland, replacing the earlier cantreds formed after the original Norman invasion.Mac Cotter 2005, pp.327–330 Some early baronies were later subdivided into half baronies with the same standing as full baronies. Baronies were mainly cadastral rather than administrative units. County Kildare ( ga, Contae Chill Dara) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Leinster and is part of the Eastern and Midland Region. It is named after the town of Kildare. Kildare County Council is the local authority for the county, which has a population of 246,977.
