Odell, Bedfordshire
Odell is a small village and civil parish in the Borough of Bedford, north Bedfordshire, England, approximately north-west of Bedford town centre, near the villages of Harrold, Felmersham, Sharnbrook and Carlton. History Roman and Saxon period Evidence of occupation includes the remains of a farm dating from just before the Roman invasion. It comprised two round timber buildings inside a fenced enclosure, and two cremation pits. After the conquest its survival and prosperity may have been linked to there being a Roman presence at Irchester. The evidence is that the farm was abandoned in the 4th century and remained unoccupied until the 6th or 7th century. After this it no doubt experienced a chequered history owing to attacks by Danish Vikings. In the early 11th century the area where the present village lies was part of five or more '' hides'' that were under Levenot, a thane of King Edward the Confessor, who owned much land. Jonathan Odell
Jonathan Odell (25 September 1737 – 25 November 1818) was a Loyalist poet who lived during the American Revolution. Early life and career Odell was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1737 to John and Temperance Odell. He graduated from Princeton University (at the time known as the College of New Jersey) in 1754. In 1755–56 he taught at the grammar school attached to the college. Although he had studied medicine, instead of becoming a doctor he joined the Church of England ministry. As a minister he preached at parish priest at Burlington and Mount Holly, both in New Jersey. He was inducted into the revived American Philosophical Society in 1768. The American Revolution When the revolution broke out Odell became a strong loyalist and wrote poetry promoting the loyalist cause. William Hunter Odell
William Hunter Odell (26 November 1811 – 25 or 26 July 1891) was a Canadian lawyer, judge, and politician. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the son of William Franklin Odell and Elizabeth Newell, Odell studied law at what was then King's College (a predecessor institution to the modern University of New Brunswick) and was admitted as an attorney in 1835 and a barrister in 1838. He was appointed to the Legislative Council of New Brunswick in 1850 and following Canadian confederation in 1867, Odell was appointed to the Senate of Canada by royal proclamation on 23 October 1867. A Conservative, Odell represented the senatorial division of Rockwood, New Brunswick until his death. William Odell (cricketer)
William Ward Odell MC (5 November 1881 – 4 October 1917) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Leicestershire. He was born in Leicester and was killed in action in the First World War at Broodseinde in the Passchendaele salient in Belgium. Family and background Odell's father was Rev Joseph Odell, a Primitive Methodist minister who had ministries in Wales, Leicester, where William was born, Brooklyn in the US, and Birmingham, where he was in charge of the Conference Hall and where William was educated at the King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys. Wally Odell
Walter Reginald Odell (19 March 1912 – 27 July 1971) was an English footballer who played as a left half in the Football League for Wrexham. He was on the books of Tottenham Hotspur without playing League football for them, and his only appearances for Darlington were in the 1939–40 Football League season abandoned when war broke out. He played non-league football for Sandy Albion, Biggleswade Town, Hitchin Town and Northfleet United. Thomas Odell (writer)
Thomas Odell (1691 – 24 May 1749) was an English playwright, and for a short time producer of plays at a theatre he erected, Goodman's Fields Theatre. Life Odell was born in 1691, the son of a Buckinghamshire squire. He came to London about 1714 with introductions to some of the Whig leaders, and a desire to try his hand at lampooning. He obtained a pension of £200 through the influence of Lord Wharton and the Earl of Sunderland, and put his pen at Robert Walpole's disposal. He is said by the antiquary William Oldys to have written a number of satires upon Alexander Pope, and to have been deterred from printing them only by Walpole's fear lest such a step might estrange Lord Chesterfield and others of Pope's admirers among his adherents. Noel Ewart Odell FRSE FGS (25 December 1890 – 21 February 1987) was an English geologist and mountaineer. In 1924 he was an oxygen officer on the Everest expedition in which George Mallory and Andrew Irvine famously perished during their summit attempt. Odell spent two weeks living above 23,000 feet (7,000m), and twice climbed to 26,800-ft and higher, all without supplemental oxygen.
