Odakyu 50000 Series VSE
The or VSE (Vault Super Express) is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train operated by Odakyu Electric Railway on ''Romancecar'' services in Japan. Two 10-car articulated sets were introduced in March 2005, manufactured by Nippon Sharyo. The type won a Japanese Good Design Award in 2005, and a Blue Ribbon Award in 2006. On 11 March 2022, the train type was withdrawn from regular service, and has since been reserved for use on special services only. A complete retirement is planned for 2023. Design The 50000 series was designed by architect Noriaki Okabe. Body construction is of double-skin aluminium. The 50000 series has regenerative brakes, and is equipped with air suspension, and tilts for passenger comfort. As with most previous ''Romancecar'' trains, the train cars in the sets are articulated. Noriaki Okabe
is a Japanese architect. He was born in Shizuoka, Japan. He worked with Renzo Piano for twenty years in Europe, from the designing construction supervision of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 1988, Okabe, then the representative of Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Japan, won the international competition of Kansai International Airport Terminal Building and was responsible for the design and construction supervision. While not currently on display, the Museum of Modern Art holds a model of the building's main structural truss in its Architecture and Design department. After the construction of the Terminal Building, he established Noriaki Okabe Architecture Network in 1995 in Tokyo. While Okabe's practice has since expanded beyond architecture into industrial design, including the Odakyu 50000 series VSE train. A tilting train is a train that has a mechanism enabling increased speed on regular rail tracks. As a train (or other vehicle) rounds a curve at speed, objects inside the train experience centrifugal force. This can cause packages to slide about or seated passengers to feel squashed by the outboard armrest, and standing passengers to lose their balance. Tilting trains are designed to counteract this by tilting the carriages towards the inside of the curve, thus compensating for the g-force. The train may be constructed such that inertial forces cause the tilting (''passive tilt''), or it may have a computer-controlled powered mechanism (''active tilt''). Odakyu 30000 Series EXE
The , branded "EXE/EXEα" ("Excellent Express/Excellent Express Alpha"), is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by the private railway operator Odakyu Electric Railway in Japan on Odakyu Odawara Line and Odakyu Enoshima Line "Romancecar" services since 1996. Design Seven 4+6-car trainsets (70 vehicles) were built between 1996 and 1999 to replace ageing Odakyu 3100 series NSE trains. Unlike earlier Romancecar trainsets, which used articulated carriages, the 30000 series sets have 20 m long bogie cars. The inner driving cabs of the 4+6-car formations have gangway doors. Air suspension is a type of vehicle suspension powered by an electric or engine-driven air pump or compressor. This compressor pumps the air into a flexible bellows, usually made from textile-reinforced rubber.
