Occupation Of Catalina Island
The Occupation of Catalina Island began on August 30, 1972, when the Brown Berets, a Chicano-rights organization, occupied Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles, for three weeks. The Berets, led by their "Prime Minister" David Sanchez, claimed the territory rightfully belonged to Mexico and demanded that its 42,000 acres of undeveloped land be developed into housing. Background Sanchez was inspired by the Occupation of Alcatraz, which had occurred three years earlier. After reading the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which was the peace settlement ending the Mexican American War of 1848, Sanchez found that neither Catalina Island nor the Channel Islands had been directly mentioned in the treaty, and thus rightfully belonged to Mexico. The Berets wanted to use the occupation to raise awareness to the fact that Mexican Americans had been systematically discriminated against and disenfranchised since the signing of the treaty. Chicano Movement
The Chicano Movement, also referred to as El Movimiento, was a social and political movement in the United States inspired by prior acts of resistance among people of Mexican descent, especially of Pachucos in the 1940s and 1950s, and the Black Power movement, that worked to embrace a Chicano/a identity and worldview that combated structural racism, encouraged cultural revitalization, and achieved community empowerment by rejecting assimilation. Before this, ''Chicano/a'' had been a term of derision, adopted by some Pachucos as an expression of defiance to Anglo-American society. Catalina Casino
The Catalina Casino is a large gathering facility located in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles in California. It is the largest building on the island and the most visible landmark in Avalon Bay when approaching the island from the mainland. The large building contains a movie theater, ballroom, and formerly an island art and history museum. The Catalina Casino gets its name from the Spanish and/or Italian language term ''casino'', meaning a "gathering place" or establishment used for social interactions and sometimes shows and dances.
