"Occhi di ragazza" ("Girl's eyes") was the entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1970, performed in Italian by Gianni Morandi. Background The ballad was initially chosen by singer Ron to be presented at the 1970 Sanremo Music Festival, but was rejected by the Selection Jury. Morandi then to led it to success, and the song became a staple of his live repertoire. The song was also important for Lucio Dalla, who had composed the song's music, as its success gave him visibility and propelled his career. At Eurovision The song was performed third on the night, following 's Henri Dès with " Retour" and preceding 's Eva Sršen with "Pridi, dala ti bom cvet". Gianni Morandi
Gianni Morandi (; born 11 December 1944) is an Italian pop singer, actor and entertainer. Early life Gian Luigi Morandi was born in a little village called Monghidoro on the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. His father Renato was active within the Italian Communist Party and Gianni used to help him sell the party newspapers. At an early age Morandi worked as a shoe-shiner, cobbler and as a vendor of sweets in the village's only cinema. His vocal abilities led him to a number of small gigs, some of which were during the Communist Party's activities. Career He made his debut in 1962 and quickly placed high at or won a number of Italian popular song festivals, including the ''Canzonissima'' festival in 1969. In 1962 he was signed by RCA Italiana and achieved national stardom with the song "Fatti mandare dalla mamma", and remained Italy's darling throughout that decade. Massimo Ranieri (born Giovanni Calone on 3 May 1951) is an Italian singer, actor, television presenter and director. Biography Early life Ranieri was born in Naples ( at Santa Lucia), the fifth of eight children in the family. When he was 10, young Giovanni would sing at restaurants, wedding receptions, etc. He was discovered by a music producer about four years later and was flown to New York to record an EP under the name of Gianni Rock. Singing career Ranieri recorded four songs in 1964: Tanti auguri signora, Se mi aspetti stasera, Non chiudere la porta, and La Prima Volta. Tony Pantano ( – January 7, 2023) was an Italian-born Australian musician, singer, songwriter, and actor. Early years and bands Tony Pantano was born in Messina, Italy and arrived in Australia with his parents in 1956. At the age of 12, Tony worked with his father at local Italian dances and weddings, playing slap bass and singing. At the age of 15 he formed his own pop group Isy and the Dynamics. Isy and the Dynamics recorded the single "One Night/Let Bygones Begone" on the In label in 1965. Pantano changed his style from pop to Latin American when he joined the group Sammy and The Dolphins as their lead vocalist and bass player. Ornella Vanoni (; born 22 September 1934) is an Italian singer-songwriter and actress. She is one of the longest-standing Italian artists, having started performing in 1956. She has released about 112 works between LP, EPs and greatest hits albums, and is considered one of most popular interpreters of Italian pop music.
