Oakland Woods Valleau
Oakland Woods "Oak" Valleau (March 20, 1892 – March 6, 1976) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Melfort from 1938 to 1948 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, the son of William Valleau and Rebecca Woods, and was educated there. He came to Saskatchewan in 1911 and took a homestead in the Moose Range district, later farming in the Hanley, Kenaston and Aylsham areas. In 1915, he married Eliza "Minn" Storey. Valleau served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Social Welfare and as Provincial Secretary. He was a member of the Saskatchewan Power Commission and later served on the board of directors for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. Hanley, Saskatchewan
Hanley is a town in Division No. 11 in Saskatchewan, Canada. It is located 65 km south of Saskatoon. The town's population in 2011 was 522. It was named after Hanley, Staffordshire, England, by early founders. It is also the seat for the rural municipality of Rosedale. History Hanley was founded in 1902 and incorporated as a town in 1906. It is a typical small agricultural community in the grain-growing region of Southern Saskatchewan. Thousands of settlers came into the area in the early part of the 20th century after land speculators had procured the lands. Early settlers came from the UK, Eastern Canada, America and Scandinavia. A large community of Norwegian descendants still makes up a significant percentage of the area's residents and there is also a substantial Mennonite-German community. Delmar Valleau
Delmar Storey Valleau (July 1, 1917 – August 5, 2000) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan and an educator in California. He was an Active Service Voters' Representative in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1948 representing members of the Canadian armed services on active duty in Great Britain. He was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the son of Oakland Woods Valleau and Minnie Storie, and was educated in Regina. Valleau served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. In 1945, he married Olive Greer. Valleau ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons in 1949 as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation candidate, losing to John Diefenbaker in the Lake Centre riding. 1948 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1948 Saskatchewan general election was held on June 24, 1948, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation government of Premier Tommy Douglas was re-elected with a reduced majority in the legislature. Although the share of the popular vote won by the Liberal Party of Walter Tucker fell by almost five percentage points, the party increased its representation in the legislature from 5 seats to 19. The Social Credit Party of Saskatchewan, which had won 2 seats and 16% of the popular vote in the 1938 election – only to disappear in the 1944 election – returned to win over 8% of the vote, but no seats. The Progressive Conservative Party – now led by Rupert Ramsay – continued to decline, and was also shut out of the legislature. Kenaston ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of McCraney No. 282 and Census Division No. 11. Kenaston is located on Highway 11 (Louis Riel Trail) at the junction of Highway 15 and is also near Highway 19. This is a scenic area of Saskatchewan situated within the rolling Allan Hills. Melfort is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. The city of Melfort (population 5,992) is the largest centre in the constituency. Smaller communities in the district include the towns of Watson, Star City, Leroy, and Naicam; and the villages of Quill Lake, Spalding, Beatty, Englefeld, and Annaheim.
