Oakland Clippers
The Oakland Clippers, also named the California Clippers, were an American soccer team based out of Oakland, California. They played in the non-FIFA sanctioned National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) in 1967 and the North American Soccer League (NASL) in the following season. Their home field was Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum. Overview The Clippers brought the first-ever national professional championship in any sport to the San Francisco Bay Area and the City of Oakland. Team owners originally planned to play in San Francisco until General Manager Derek Liecty convinced them that the new Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum was a better choice than San Francisco's old and windy Kezar stadium. Through connections in Yugoslavia, the Clippers were able to hire Dr. Aleksandar Obradovic, former Team Manager of Red Star of Belgrade. The ''Oakland Tribune'' is a weekly newspaper published in Oakland, California, by the Bay Area News Group (BANG), a subsidiary of MediaNews Group. Founded in 1874, the ''Tribune'' rose to become an influential daily newspaper. With the decline of print media, in March 2016, parent company Digital First Media announced that the ''Tribune'' would fold into a new newspaper entitled the ''East Bay Times'' along with the company's other newspapers in the East Bay starting April 5, 2016. Ilija Lukić (Serbian Cyrillic: Илија Лукић; 21 January 1942 – 13 June 2018) was a Serbian footballer who played as a forward. Playing career Lukić started playing in the youth teams of Belgrade's FK Železnik. In 1961, at age 19, he joined Second League FK Priština and he was soon regarded as one of the finest strikers in the country. That made attention turn to him and he signed with the FK Partizan that was having that season their historic achievement of reaching the 1966 European Cup Final that they lost to Real Madrid. After not getting many opportunities to play, he was moving next season to the California based Oakland Clippers where he would help the club win the 1967 National Professional Soccer League.
