Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation
The Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation (ORMF) is a non-profit organization based in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 2002 as a governing body dedicated to the enhancement and preservation of the Oak Ridges Moraine as a healthy and vibrant ecosystem. History The Oak Ridges Moraine stretches 160 kilometres from the Trent River in the east to the Niagara Escarpment in the west. It is more than 90 per cent privately owned with a population of approximately 250,000 to 300,000 people. It crosses 32 municipalities, supplies drinking water to more than 250,000 individuals and supports related agricultural, industrial, commercial and recreational uses. In 2001 the Ontario government recognized that in order to preserve the Moraine’s health and diversity there was a need for provincial regulation over its many complex land use issues. Newmarket, Ontario
Newmarket ( 2021 population: 87,942) is a town and regional seat of the Regional Municipality of York in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is part of Greater Toronto in the Golden Horseshoe region of Southern Ontario. The name stems from the fact that the settlement was a "New Market", in contrast to York as the ''Old Market''. The town was formed as one of many farming communities in the area, but also developed an industrial centre on the Northern Railway of Canada's mainline, which was built in 1853 through what would become the downtown area. It also became a thriving market town with the arrival of the Metropolitan Street Railway in 1899. Oak Ridges Moraine
The Oak Ridges Moraine is an ecologically important geological landform in the Mixedwood Plains of south-central Ontario, Canada. The moraine covers a geographic area of between Caledon and Rice Lake, near Peterborough. One of the most significant landforms in southern Ontario, the moraine gets its name from the rolling hills and river valleys extending from the Niagara Escarpment east to Rice Lake. It was formed 12,000 years ago by advancing and retreating glaciers (''see'' geological origins, below). The Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act, officially known as the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act, 2001, is a conservation plan for land situated on or near the Oak Ridges Moraine in Ontario, Canada. The legislation was enacted by the Government of Ontario in 2001. The primary purpose of the legislation is to protect the ecological and hydrological integrity of the Oak Ridges Moraine. The legislation was passed by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on 13 December 2001, and received Royal Assent the next day.
