Oak Hill Park (Barnet)
Oak Hill Park is in East Barnet in the London Borough of Barnet. It is one of Barnet's premier parks and received a Green Flag Award for 2009–10. It is a large area of parkland with a wide range of facilities, including an outdoor gym, a bowls green, football pitches, a golf course, three tennis courts, a multi-sports court and a play area for toddlers. Part of the park became Oak Hill Wood, a Local Nature Reserve in 1997. Pymme's Brook and Pymmes Brook Trail pass through the park. Oak Hill Park has been part of Parkrun since August 2011 There is access from Church Hill Road, Parkside Gardens, Daneland and Vernon Crescent. History Oak Hill dates back to at least the 11th century, as part of the Monkenfrith estate owned by the church. An oak is a tree or shrub in the genus ''Quercus'' (; Latin "oak tree") of the beech family, Fagaceae. There are approximately 500 extant species of oaks. The common name "oak" also appears in the names of species in related genera, notably ''Lithocarpus'' (stone oaks), as well as in those of unrelated species such as '' Grevillea robusta'' (silky oaks) and the Casuarinaceae (she-oaks). The genus ''Quercus'' is native to the Northern Hemisphere, and includes deciduous and evergreen species extending from cool temperate to tropical latitudes in the Americas, Asia, Europe, and North Africa. East Barnet Urban District
East Barnet Valley was a local government district from 1863 to 1965 around the town of East Barnet. It was partly in the counties of Hertfordshire and Middlesex until 1889, when the Middlesex part was transferred to Hertfordshire. It was renamed East Barnet in 1935. Creation The district was created under the Local Government Act 1858 on 25 September 1863, as East Barnet Valley Local Government District. The district was governed by a local board. Nature Reserves In Barnet
The London Borough of Barnet, on the northern outskirts of London, is mainly residential, but it has large areas of green space and farmland. The spread of suburban development into the countryside was halted by the designation of a statutory Green Belt around London after the Second World War, and almost one third of Barnet's area of is Green Belt. Without this control, Barnet would be very different today, and this list of nature reserves would be much shorter. Most of Barnet lies over London Clay, which is poor for agriculture, and open land is mainly used for activities such as horse grazing, playing fields, parks and golf courses. Features of the traditional agricultural landscape have survived, such as old hedgerows, ancient trees and areas of herb-rich grassland. The London Borough of Barnet, located on the northern periphery of London and having much of the area within its boundaries in the Metropolitan Green Belt, has many parks and open spaces. St Mary The Virgin, East Barnet
St Mary the Virgin is the Church of England parish church for East Barnet within the Diocese of St Albans. It is located on Church Hill. History Early history The church was originally constructed in 1080, as a small chapel on the hill. It was dedicated to St Mary the Virgin. The Abbot of St Albans consecrated it and he became both Patron and Rector until the Reformation. After the Reformation, the church's rector was appointed by the reigning monarch – a practice which continues to this day. The first chapel had thick walls made of compressed rubble, lime and plaster with stone around the openings. The windows had no glass. Much of the north wall is from that time. The frame of the door on the south side is probably also from that same period. The chapel might have had an apse. Sir Simon Haughton Clarke, 9th Baronet
Sir Simon Haughton Clarke, 9th Baronet (1764–1832) was a West Indies merchant, said to be the seventh richest man in England. He had a notable collection of paintings at his mansion at Oakhill. His estate, bought in 1821, ran from Chase Side, Southgate to High Road, Whetstone. After his death, his widow and sons lived at Oakhill until 1857 when the estate was broken up. He is remembered in a monument at St Mary the Virgin churchyard in East Barnet, originally visible from Oakhill house. Family Clarke had at least two sons with his wife, both of whom were baronets. Oak Hill College is a conservative evangelical theological college located on Chase Side in Southgate, London, England. Its aim is to prepare men and women from the Church of England and Independent churches for ministry in the real world. Overview The College trains men and women from the Church of England and other denominations for ministry in the real world. Charles Edward Baring Young
Charles Edward Baring Young (19 March 1850 – 22 September 1928) was an English educationalist and Conservative politician. Young was born at Paddington, the son of Charles Baring Young and his wife Elizabeth Winthrop. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was later called to the bar at Inner Temple. On the death of his father in 1882, he inherited an estate at Monkenfrith, East Barnet. Young had strong Christian principles and was inspired to help underprivileged and orphan children from London. In September 1883, he purchased the Daylesford and Kingham Hill estates in Oxfordshire in order to establish Kingham Hill School for boys. Many years after it became a mixed school. East Barnet is an area of north London within the London Borough of Barnet bordered by New Barnet, Cockfosters and Southgate. It is a largely residential suburb whose central area contains shops, public houses, restaurants and services, and the parish church of St Mary the Virgin. Parkrun (stylised as parkrun) is a collection of events for walkers, runners and volunteers that take place every Saturday morning at more than 2,000 locations in 23 countries across six continents. Junior Parkrun (stylised as junior parkrun) is a spin-off event that provides a event for children aged 4–14 on a Sunday morning. Parkrun events are free to enter and are delivered by volunteers, supported by a small group of staff at its headquarters. Parkrun was founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt on 2 October 2004 at Bushy Park in London, England. The event was originally called the Bushy Park Time Trial. It grew into a network of similar events called the UK Time Trials, before adopting the name Parkrun in 2008 and expanding into other countries. Pymmes Brook Trail
The Pymmes Brook Trail is located in the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey and is just under long. The brook is named after William Pymme, a local landowner. The trail goes from Hadley Green to Tottenham Hale, where the trail connects with the Lea Valley Walk. Most of the first half of the trail, as far as Arnos Park, runs beside Pymmes Brook, but after that the brook is only encountered intermittently as much of the brook passes through private land which is not open to the public. In its lower reaches sections of the brook have been culverted to alleviate the risk of flooding. Course The trail starts on Hadley Green, where the headwaters of Pymmes Brook rise, with a link from High Barnet tube station. Together with the London Loop, it then drops through Monken Hadley Common to Jack's Lake, to meet another link from Cockfosters tube station.
