OKBM Afrikantov (full name: OAO I. I. Afrikantov OKB Mechanical Engineering, russian: Опытное конструкторское бюро машиностроения им. И. И. Африкантова) is a nuclear engineering company located in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. It is a subsidiary of Rosatom. The company is named after Igor Afrikantov. The company is best known as the main designer for the Soviet Union's and Russia's flagship nuclear propulsion projects, including reactors for nuclear submarines, nuclear-powered icebreakers, and the floating nuclear power plant project. It also designs fast breeder reactors. History The company was founded in 1945. In 1998, it was named after its former chief designer and director I. I. Afrikantov. Igor Ivanovich Afrikantov (russian: Игорь Иванович Африкантов; 1916 – 1969) was a Soviet designer and manager of building nuclear reactors and components for the Russian nuclear industry, civil fleet, and navy. Life and career Igor Ivanovich Afrikantov was born in Pushkarka, a village in the Arzamas District of Gorky Oblast, Russia. RITM-200
The RITM-200 is an integrated generation 3+ pressurized water reactor developed by OKBM Afrikantov and designed to produce 55 MWe. The design is an improvement of KLT-40 reactor. It uses up to 20% enriched uranium-235 and can be refueled every 10 years for a 60 year planned lifespan in floating power plant installation. If installed in a stationary power plant the fuel cycle is 6 years. The RITM-200 has a compact integrated layout placing equipment within the steam generator casing, halving system weight compared to earlier designs and improving ability to operate in rolling and pitching seas. It powers the Project 22220 icebreakers, the first of which went critical in October 2019. In November 2020 Rosatom announced plans to place a land-based RITM-200N SMR in isolated Ust-Kuyga town in Yakutia. ''Akademik Lomonosov'' (russian: Академик Ломоносов) is a non-self-propelled power barge that operates as the first Russian floating nuclear power station. The ship was named after Russian Academy of Sciences, academician Mikhail Lomonosov. It is docked in the Pevek harbour, providing heat to the town and supplying electricity to the regional Chaun-Bilibino power system. It is the world’s northernmost nuclear power plant. The OK-650 reactor is the nuclear fission reactor used for powering the Soviet Navy's Project 685 Плавник/''Plavnik'' (Mike), Project 971 Щука-Б/''Shchuka-B'' ( Akula), and Project 945 Барракуда/''Barrakuda'', Кондор/''Kondor'', and Марс/''Mars'' ( Sierra) submarines, and in pairs to power the Project 941 Акула/''Akula'' (Typhoon) and Project 949 Гранит/''Granit'' and Антей/''Antei'' ( Oscar) third generation submarines. The OK-150 reactor (1st generation) and its successor, the OK-900 reactor (2nd generation) are Soviet marine nuclear reactors used to power ships at sea. They are pressurized water reactors (PWRs) that use enriched uranium-235 fuel. They have been used in various Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker ships. The reactor was developed by OKBM. China Experimental Fast Reactor
The China Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR) is China's first fast nuclear reactor, and is located outside Beijing at the China Institute of Atomic Energy. It aims to provide China with fast-reactor design, construction, and operational experience, and will be a key facility for testing and researching components and materials to be used in subsequent fast reactors. The reactor achieved first criticality on July 21, 2010 and started generating power a year later on July 21, 2011. In October 2012 Xinhua announced that the CEFR has passed official checks.
