OBORO is an artist-run centre in Montréal created in 1982 by Daniel Dion and Su Schnee. History For its first 10 years, OBORO was located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard in Montreal. In 1992, OBORO moved to its current premises on Berri Street Berri Street (officially in french: rue Berri) is a major north–south street located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Berri Street links De la Commune Street in the south and Somerville Street in the north. The street is interrupted between Rosemont .... In 1995, OBORO launched its New Media Lab. The Lab is a space devoted to new technologies, electronic media and telecommunications. In 2001, the Lab expanded and moved to the 2nd floor of the building. Curator Dominique Fontaine notes that OBORO "plays a central role in Montreal's media art ecology.". An artist-run space or artist-run centre (Canada) is a gallery or other facility operated or directed by artists, frequently circumventing the structures of public art centers, museums, or commercial galleries and allowing for a more experimental program. An artist-run initiative (ARI) is any project run by artists, including sound or visual artists, to present their and others' projects. They might approximate a traditional art gallery space in appearance or function, or they may take a markedly different approach, limited only by the artist's understanding of the term.
