	Oxton, Merseyside Oxton is a suburb of Birkenhead, Merseyside, England. Administratively it is a ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral. Originally a village in its own right, it became part of the Municipal Borough of Birkenhead upon its creation in 1877. Before local government reorganisation on 1 April 1974, it was part of the County Borough of Birkenhead, within the county of Cheshire. History The name ''Oxa-tún'' derives from Old Norse, meaning "a farm or enclosure where oxen are kept". By 1278, the name had been adapted into Old English as ''Oxeton'' and was recorded as ''Oxon'' in 1549. 	Oxton, North Yorkshire Oxton is a village and civil parish in the Selby District of North Yorkshire, England, and about south-west from the county town and city of York. The parish touches Bolton Percy, Grimston, Kirkby Wharfe with North Milford, Steeton and Tadcaster. In 2001 the parish had a population of 20. The name "Oxton" means 'Ox farm/settlement', and was recorded in the ''Domesday Book'' as "Ositone". The lord of the manor in 1086 was Osbern D'Arques, who had received the manor of a 2 ploughlands area from the 1066 lord Alwin, and who was also tenant-in-chief to king William I. 	Oxton, Nottinghamshire Oxton is a village in Nottinghamshire, England, with a 568 residents at the 2011 census. It is located 5 miles west of Southwell, 5 miles north of Lowdham, 10 miles NE of Nottingham and 2 miles NE of Calverton, and lies on the B6386, and is very close to the A6097 trunk road. Oxton has a church dedicated to St Peter & St Paul; a post office and two pubs. Oxton also has two fords – a small ford within the village itself, and a much larger ford on Beanford Lane – often as deep as 1 ft whilst remaining open to all traffic. It is however closed each March, so that the toads found in the swamp-like area, which the ford crosses, can breed. 	Oxton, Scottish Borders Oxton is a small rural village in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, just off the A68. It is north of Lauder, and southeast of the centre of Edinburgh, yet in a quiet rural position. History The village of Oxton lies in the parish of Channelkirk. This name for the parish appears to have come into general use in the district around the beginning of the eighteenth century but its ancient name was Childer-kirk and later Gingle-kirk. A Roman camp, visible from the air, and recorded on Ordnance survey maps has been identified nearby and may have been connected with the progress of the army of Septimius Severus in AD 209–210. Saint Cuthbert, who became Bishop of Lindisfarne, was born in the vicinity in AD 635, and probably baptised his early converts at the nearby Holy Water Cleuch (spring).
