Ovilu Tunnillie
Ovilu (Oviloo) Tunnillie (December 20, 1949 – June 12, 2014) was born at Kangia, Baffin Island, Northwest Territories (now Nunavut) and was an Inuit sculptor. Her carvings served as her commentary on both traditional and changing contemporary Inuit culture. She was one of the first Inuit artists to work with an autobiographical theme. At a young age, Oviloo's family was disrupted by the government's forced removal of tuberculosis patients to sanitariums in southern Canada. She was taken to Clearwater Lake Indian Hospital in Manitoba, where she spent two year-long stays. The experience of dehumanization and alienation by white officials remained a major theme in her art. Tunnillie came from a noted artistic family. Nunavut ( , ; iu, ᓄᓇᕗᑦ , ; ) is the largest and northernmost Provinces and territories of Canada#Territories, territory of Canada. The Canadian Museum of History (french: Musée canadien de l’histoire) is a national museum on anthropology, Canadian history, cultural studies, and ethnology in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The purpose of the museum is to promote the heritage of Canada, as well as support related research. The museum is based in a designed by Douglas Cardinal. The museum originated from a museum established by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1856, which later expanded to include an anthropology division in 1910. Uriash Puqiqnak
Uriash Puqiqnak, CM (born April 15, 1946) is an experienced soapstone carver and former territorial and municipal level politician in Canada. He served as Mayor of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut and was a member of the Nunavut Legislature from 1999 until 2004. Uriash Puqiqnak briefly served as acting speaker in 2000 after Levi Barnabas' resignation. Carving Puqiqnak is a famous soapstone carver, his works are on display all over Canada. He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada on July 29, 2005. Lucy Meeko
Lucy Meeko (1929-2004) was an Inuit artist known for her multidisciplinary work in sculpture, printmaking, basketry and sewing. Meeko was born in Kuujjuaraapik, Quebec. Her career as a sculptor began in the 1950s; in the 1970s, together with her husband Noah, she created engravings for the Kuujjuarapic Cooperative. Meeko's work was featured in ''Keeping our Stories Alive: The Sculpture of Canada's Inuit'' along with the work of Ovilu Tunnillie and Uriash Puqiqnak.
