Overpool
Overpool is a village on the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire, England. It is a suburb of Ellesmere Port, and part of the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester. History The name means "upper pool" and derives from the Old English words ''uferra'' and ''pōl''. Recorded in the Domesday Book under the ownership of William Malbank, the settlement had a population of only two households. Pool consisted of two townships: Nether Pool and Over Pool, in Eastham parish of the Wirral Hundred. Overpool became a civil parish in 1866 and was part of Wirral Rural District from 1894. The parish was abolished in 1911 and absorbed into Ellesmere Port. The population was recorded at 89 in 1801, 72 in 1851 and 91 in 1901. From the 1930s, the settlement of Netherpool was lost to industrial redevelopment and the 16th century Poole Hall was demolished shortly before the outbreak of World War II. Overpool Railway Station
Overpool railway station was opened on 17 August 1988 and serves the central area of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England. It is situated on the Hooton–Helsby line and is served by the ''Wirral Line'' which is part of the Merseyrail network. It became part of the Merseyrail network in 1994, when the branch from Hooton to Ellesmere Port was electrified, and through train services to Liverpool via Birkenhead commenced. Facilities The station has platform CCTV. Each platform has a sheltered waiting area. There are live electronic departure and arrival screens, on the platform, for passenger information. There is a payphone, next to the entrance, on platform 1. There is ramp access, to each platform, from the Overpool Road bridge, for passengers with wheelchairs or prams. Ellesmere Port
Ellesmere Port ( ) is a port town in the Cheshire West and Chester borough in Cheshire, England. Ellesmere Port is on the south eastern edge of the Wirral Peninsula, north of Chester, south of Birkenhead, southwest of Runcorn and south of Liverpool. The town had a population of 61,090 in the 2011 census. Ellesmere Port also forms part of the wider Birkenhead urban area, which had a population of 325,264 in 2011. The town was originally established on the River Mersey at the entrance to the Ellesmere Canal. M53 Motorway
The M53 is an motorway in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral and Cheshire on the Wirral Peninsula in England. It is also referred to as the Mid Wirral Motorway. It runs between the Kingsway Tunnel, at Wallasey in the north, and the A55 at Chester. The main reason for the motorway was to provide a through route to the new Mersey Road Tunnel, Kingsway, which was built at the same time. Part of this motorway was originally the M531. Route Starting at the northern end, the motorway starts in Wallasey at the exit slip roads from the Kingsway Tunnel from Liverpool. It loops round the north west of Birkenhead and then runs south as a dual 3-lane route between Upton, Woodchurch in the west and Prenton. Little Sutton, Cheshire
Little Sutton is a village on the Wirral Peninsula, in the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. Located between Childer Thornton and Great Sutton, it is a suburb of the town of Ellesmere Port. Little Sutton is mostly residential and sits either side of the A41 road, linking Birkenhead and Chester. History Little Sutton and neighbouring Great Sutton were mentioned in a single entry in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Sudtone'', under the ownership of the canons of St Werburgh's Abbey. The settlement was previously a township in the parish of Eastham, in the Wirral Hundred. A civil parish from 1866, it was abolished in 1950 and subsumed into Ellesmere Port. Merseyrail is a commuter rail network serving the Liverpool City Region and adjacent areas of Cheshire and Lancashire. Merseyrail operates 66 railway stations across two lines – the Northern Line and Wirral Line, which are dedicated electrified lines that serve underground stations in the centres of Liverpool and Birkenhead. Wirral Rural District
Wirral Rural District was a rural district on the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire, England from 1894 to 1933. It was created under the Local Government Act 1894 from the Sanitary district, Wirral Rural Sanitary District. From the beginning of the twentieth century, some civil parishes were transferred to the control of neighbouring local authorities. Netherpool, Whitby and Overpool had become part of Ellesmere Port, Ellesmere Port Urban District by 1911. Landican, Prenton and Thingwall were absorbed into Birkenhead, Birkenhead County Borough in 1928. Wirral (; ), known locally as The Wirral, is a peninsula in North West England. The roughly rectangular peninsula is about long and wide and is bounded by the River Dee to the west (forming the boundary with Wales), the River Mersey to the east, and the Irish Sea to the north. Historically, the Wirral was wholly in Cheshire; in the Domesday Book, its border with the rest of the county was placed at "two arrow falls from Chester city walls". The Wirral line is one of two commuter rail routes operated by Merseyrail and centred on Merseyside, England, the other being the Northern line.
