''Over the Top to Victory'', also known as ''Doughboy Statue'' and ''Their Country's Call Answered'', is an outdoor bronze sculpture by John Paulding, formerly located at the Marion County Courthouse in Salem, Oregon, United States. The statue was commissioned by the American War Mothers and the Gold Star Mothers Club to commemorate the 87 men and one woman from Marion County who died in World War I. Description The bronze sculpture depicts a uniformed World War I soldier, running and holding a gun with a bayonet in his proper left hand and a grenade in his opposite hand. John Paulding (sculptor)
John Paulding (April 5, 1883 – April 15, 1935) was an American sculptor best remembered for his World War I memorials. Paulding was born in Darke County, Ohio. He studied sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago and was to remain in Chicago until his death at an early age in 1935. At least two of his World War I memorials became very popular and casts of them can be found in many places throughout the United States. Controversy with E. M. Viquesney Paulding and sculptor E. M. Viquesney both produced very similar World War I monuments within a few months of each other, resulting in various copyright violation lawsuits. Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) was a community-based effort to identify, document, and conserve outdoor sculpture in the United States. The program was initiated in 1989 and ended in 1999. History Save Outdoor Sculpture! was initiated by Heritage Preservation: The National Institute of Conservation in 1989. As of 1998, volunteers had cataloged and assessed the condition of over 30,000 outdoor statues and monuments. The Smithsonian Museum of American Art became an active partner in the SOS! project, making SOS! material available online as part of the Inventory of American Sculpture at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Astoria Victory Monument, also known as the Doughboy Monument or Soldiers' Monument, is a monument located in Astoria, Oregon, in the United States. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The concrete, Spanish Revival monument designed by Charles T. Diamond was constructed in 1926, incorporating a cast of a sculpture by John Paulding. The structure was recognized individually by the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and as part of the Uniontown–Alameda Historic District in 1988. History The National Register of Historic Places recognized the monument individually on November 15, 1984, and later included the structure as part of the Uniontown–Alameda Historic District on August 25, 1988. Bronze is the most popular metal for Casting (metalworking), cast metal sculptures; a cast bronze sculpture is often called simply "a bronze".
