The rural–urban fringe, also known as the outskirts, rurban, peri-urban or the urban hinterland, can be described as the "landscape interface between town and country", or also as the transition zone where urban and rural uses mix and often clash together. Alternatively, it can be viewed as a landscape type in its own right, one forged from an interaction of urban and rural land uses. Definition Its definition shifts depending on the global location, but typically in Europe, where urban areas are intensively managed to prevent urban sprawl and protect agricultural land, the urban fringe will be characterized by certain land uses which have either purposely moved away from the urban area, or require much larger tracts of land. ''Outskirts'' (russian: Окра́ина, meaning "fringe" or "periphery"), also known in English as ''The Patriots'' or by the transliterated Russian title ''Okraina'', is a 1933 Soviet film directed by Boris Barnet. Plot summary In a small town in a remote part of the Russian Empire, factory workers struggle to organize against the owners. When World war I comes, they unite as soldiers of the Tsar on the Eastern Front. Local girl Anka forges a relationship with a German POW. The film criticises war profiteers and encourages workers to reach out to one another across national lines. In 1917, the Tsar is forced to abdicate following the February Revolution. ''The Outskirts'' (russian: Окраина, meaning ''Outskirts''), also known by the transliterated Russian title ''Okraina'', is a 1998 Russian film starring Yuri Dubrovin, Nikolay Olyalin, Alexey Pushkin and Alexey Vanin. Loosely based on Boris Barnet's 1933 film '' Outskirts'', it was directed and written by Pyotr Lutsik. Synopsis The film starts as parody of a Soviet-era socialist realist film-making of the 1930s (The title is taken from the classic 1933 film by the Soviet filmmaker Boris Barnet, in which the beginning of the farm collectivization era is depicted.) Peaceful life of farmers of remote Uralian village is interrupted when their former collective farm is sold. The toughest ones unite and track down the offenders one by one. ''Outskirts'' is the debut studio album by Canadian country rock group Blue Rodeo, released in March 1987 through Risqué Disque. The singles "Try" and "Rose-Coloured Glasses" were hits in Canada, where "Outskirts" and "Rebel" also made the singles charts. To mark the 25th anniversary of the album, Blue Rodeo released a two-LP vinyl remixed edition, ''Outskirts Remix'', on November 27, 2012. On the thirtieth anniversary of the album's release, Jim Cuddy posted the following message on the band's website: "The first night we started to make ''Outskirts'' was also the night my wife Rena went into labour with our first child Devin. So needless to say it was an unforgettable night. The record came out to a deafening silence. Not a single radio station played the first single, 'Outskirts'. We sold 5000 records which we thought was amazing but were told we would be dropped if nothing else happened.
