Our Lady's Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Mhuire) was a psychiatric hospital in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. History The hospital, which was designed by William Fogerty William Fogerty, FRIAI, FRIBA, AAI was an Irish architect active in mid-nineteenth-century Limerick, London, New York City and Dublin. Born in Limerick, he studied in the early 1850s at Queen's College, Cork. He moved to Dublin in the early 1 ..., opened as the Ennis Asylum in 1868. It became Ennis Mental Hospital in the 1920s and went on to become Our Lady's Hospital in the 1950s. After the introduction of deinstitutionalisation in the late 1980s the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in March 2002. The site, which has changed hands several times since the hospital closed, was acquired by a new developer in March 2018. Ennis () is the county town of County Clare, in the mid-west of Ireland. The town lies on the River Fergus, north of where the river widens and enters the Shannon Estuary. Ennis is the largest town in County Clare, with a population of 25,276, making it the 6th largest town, and 12th largest urban settlement, as of 2016. Dating from the 12th century the town's Irish name is short for ' ("island of the long rowing meadow") deriving from its location between two courses of the River Fergus. William Fogerty
William Fogerty, FRIAI, FRIBA, AAI was an Irish architect active in mid-nineteenth-century Limerick, London, New York City and Dublin. Born in Limerick, he studied in the early 1850s at Queen's College, Cork. He moved to Dublin in the early 1860s, to London and then New York in the early 1870s, and back to Dublin in 1875. His offices were at 23 Harcourt Street, Dublin. He died of smallpox at the age of forty-four in 1878. Deinstitutionalisation
Deinstitutionalisation (or deinstitutionalization) is the process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services for those diagnosed with a mental disorder or developmental disability. In the late 20th century, it led to the closure of many psychiatric hospitals, as patients were increasingly cared for at home, in halfway houses and clinics, in regular hospitals, or not at all. Deinstitutionalisation works in two ways. The first focuses on reducing the population size of mental institutions by releasing patients, shortening stays, and reducing both admissions and readmission rates.
