Maria Otero (born 1950) was the first holder of the office of the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights from January 15, 2012 through February 4, 2013. She also served as the President's Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. Biography Otero was born in La Paz, Bolivia, one of nine children, and moved to the United States at the age of 12 when her father was one of the founding officers of the Inter-American Development Bank. Her uncle was Jaime Otero Calderon, a Bolivian statesman. Regino José Otero Gómez (September 7, 1915 – October 21, 1988) was a Cuban professional baseball player who had a long career in the minor leagues in the United States (1936–53), and played briefly with the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball in 1945. Miguel Otero Silva (October 26, 1908 – August 28, 1985), was a Venezuelan writer, journalist, humorist and politician. A figure of great relevance in Venezuelan literature, his literary and journalistic works related strictly to the socio-political history of Venezuela. Miguel Antonio Otero II (October 17, 1859 – August 7, 1944) was an American politician, businessman, and author who served as the 16th Governor of New Mexico Territory from 1897 to 1906. He was the son of Miguel Antonio Otero, a prominent businessman and New Mexico politician. Early life Miguel Antonio Otero had an adventurous boyhood as his father, a businessman and railroad baron, moved the family from town to town across Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. The family established a permanent home in Las Vegas, New Mexico about 1879. Miguel Antonio Otero (June 21, 1829 – May 30, 1882) was a prominent American politician of the New Mexico Territory and instrumental in the economic development of the territory. Early life Miguel Antonio Otero was born in Valencia, Nuevo México to Don Vicente Otero and Doña Gertrudis Aragón de Otero. Don Vicente had held prominent civic positions as judge and mayor in Valencia County, under both Spanish and Mexican Governments. Otero received his early education in Valencia. In 1841 he enrolled at St. Louis University in the state of Missouri and subsequently graduated from Pingree College in Fishkill, New York, where he taught while he began his study of law. In 1851 he returned to Missouri, where he studied law and was admitted to the bar. Mariano Sabino Otero (August 29, 1844 – February 1, 1904) was a Congressional delegate from the Territory of New Mexico, nephew of Miguel Antonio Otero (I) and cousin of Miguel Antonio Otero (II). Born in Peralta, New Mexico, Otero attended private and parochial schools and St. Louis University, Missouri. He engaged in commercial pursuits and stock raising, and subsequently became a banker. He was probate judge of Bernalillo County in 1871–1879. He was also nominated by the Democratic State convention as a candidate for Delegate to the Forty-fourth Congress, but declined. Otero was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1879 – March 3, 1881). Marcelo Alejandro Otero Larzábal (born 14 April 1971) is an Uruguayan retired footballer who played as a striker. He was nicknamed "Marujo" during his career, and is the younger brother of former midfielder Raul Otero.
