Kip Hanrahan
Kip Hanrahan (born December 9, 1954) is an American jazz music impresario, record producer and percussionist. Personal life Hanrahan was born in a Puerto Rican neighborhood in the Bronx to an Irish-Jewish family. His father left when he was 6 months old, leaving his mother and grandfather to raise him. He has described his grandfather as "this cynical Russian communist" whose approval of rebellion against authority he cites as among his early musical influences. While attending Cooper Union on a scholarship, he studied with visual-conceptual artist Hans Haacke. He has cited Haacke as his strongest influence. As part of his university study, he traveled to North Africa, and lived in India for a year. In the 1970's he moved to Paris, France to work on films with , Jean-Paul Sartre and Jean-Luc Godard. Edsel Gomez (born August 9, 1962) is a Puerto Rican jazz pianist. In 2007, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for the album ''Cubist Music''. He arranged and directed Dee Dee Bridgewater's Grammy-winning recording '' Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee Bridgewater''. He has worked with Jack DeJohnette, Don Byron, Brian Lynch, and Eddie Palmieri. The Batá drum is a double-headed drum shaped like an hourglass with one end larger than the other. The percussion instrument is still used for its original purpose as it is one of the most important drums in the yourba land and used for traditional and religious activities among the Yoruba. Mario Rivera (July 22, 1939 - August 10, 2007) was a Latin jazz saxophonist from the Dominican Republic. Besides saxophone, Rivera played trumpet, flute, piano, vibraphone, congas, and drums. Career When Rivera was 22, he moved to New York City from the Dominican Republic and accompanied singer Joe Valle. He spent two years with bandleader Tito Rodríguez. During his career he worked with Mongo Santamaria, Eddie Palmieri, and Machito. In 1988 he became a member of the United Nations Orchestra led by Dizzy Gillespie. He was also a member of the Afro-Cuban Jazz Band led by Chico O'Farrill. From the 1970s to the 1990s he worked with Tito Puente. Both appeared in the films ''Calle 54'' and ''The Mambo Kings''. His only solo album, El Commandante, was released in 1996. Rivera died on cancer on August 10, 2007.
