Original Congregational Church Of Wrentham
The Original Congregational Church of Wrentham is a historic church in Wrentham, Massachusetts. The present church is a Greek Revival structure built in 1834 for a congregation (Wrentham's first) formed in 1692. The church, which occupies a prominent position in the center of Wrentham, has a four-stage tower (rebuilt after the New England Hurricane of 1938), and a tetrastyle Doric portico. The building underwent a modernizing renovation in 1878, at which time many of the windows were modified to have rounded tops; many of these changes were reversed during renovations in the 1950s. The church building was listed the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. The early church records burned in the house of its first minister, Samuel Man, on October 26, 1699. Wrentham, Massachusetts
Wrentham ( ) is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,178 at the 2020 census. History In 1660, five men from Dedham were sent to explore the lakes near George Indian's wigwam and to report back to the selectmen what they found. The report of those men, Daniel Fisher, Anthony Fisher, Sgt. Fuller, Richard Ellis, and Richard Wheeler, was received with such enthusiasm that in March 1661 it was voted to start a new settlement there. The Town then voted to send Ellis and Timothy Dwight to go negotiate with King Phillip to purchase the title to the area known as Wollomonopoag. They purchased 600 acres of land for £24, 6s. The money was paid out of pocket by Captain Willett, who accompanied Ellis and Dwight. The Town voted to assess a tax upon the cow commons to repay him, but some thought the money should be paid by those who would be moving to the new village. The 1938 New England Hurricane (also referred to as the Great New England Hurricane and the Long Island Express Hurricane) was one of the deadliest and most destructive tropical cyclones to strike Long Island, New York, and New England. The storm formed near the coast of Africa on September 9, becoming a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane scale, before making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on Long Island on Wednesday, September 21. It is estimated that the hurricane killed 682 people, damaged or destroyed more than 57,000 homes, and caused property losses estimated at $306 million ($4.7 billion in 2017). Multiple other sources, however, mention that the 1938 hurricane might have really been a more powerful Category 4, having winds similar to Hurricanes Hugo, Harvey, Frederic and Gracie when it ran through Long Island and New England. Samuel Man
Samuel Man (July 6, 1647 – May 22, 1719) was an early teacher in Dedham, Massachusetts and minister in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Personal life Man was born on July 6, 1647 to William and Mary Man of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Man was an only child and his parents designated their son for the ministry from an early age. He married Esther Ware, the granddaughter of John Hunting, on May 13, 1673 and they had seven sons and four daughters. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1665. He was the great-grandfather of Horace Mann and a descendant of John Man. He died on May 22, 1719 and his funeral sermon was later published. Dedham While living in Dedham, Man was hired to teach in the Dedham Public Schools on May 13, 1667 at a salary of £10 a year. He continued in that position until 1672 when he was required to give two months notice before he moved to Wollomonopoag.
