Orienteering At The World Games ...
Orienteering at the World Games is organized as an individual competition for both women and men, and a mix relay for teams of two men and two women. The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) became a member of the International World Games Association (IWGA) in 1995. The World Games are held every four years, for sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games. Orienteering was first included in the program in 2001. Orienteering
Orienteering is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed many variations. Among these, the oldest and the most popular is foot orienteering. For the purposes of this article, foot orienteering serves as a point of departure for discussion of all other variations, but almost any sport that involves racing against a clock and requires navigation with a map is a type of orienteering. World Games 2017
The 2017 World Games ( pl, Igrzyska Światowe 2017), commonly known as Wrocław 2017 (german: Breslau 2017; sli, Brassel 2017), was the tenth World Games, a major international multi-sport event, meant for sports, or disciplines or events within a sport, that were not contested in the Olympic Games, held from 20 to 30 July 2017 in Wrocław, Poland. The World Games were organized by the Wrocław Organizing Committee. Wrocław was selected as the host city in January 2012 in Lausanne, over Budapest, Hungary. It was the first time The World Games was organised in Poland. Wrocław was the sixth city in Europe after London (1985), Karlsruhe (1989), The Hague (1993), Lahti (1997) and Duisburg ( 2005) to host The World Games. Tim Robertson (orienteer)
Tim Robertson (born 5 August 1995) is a New Zealand orienteering competitor. He won the gold medal in the sprint course at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in 2014, and 2015. Robertson was born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. He has competed at the New Zealand Orienteering Championships, receiving many silver, gold, and bronze medals. Junior World Orienteering Championships Robertson competed at the Junior World Orienteering Championships for the first time in 2011. He placed 78 in the sprint, and a 93 place in the long. Robertson return in 2012 with a placing of 32 in the sprint, 29 place in the long, and 7 in the relay. In 2013 Robertson won his first world championships medal, taking third place in the sprint. World Games 2022
The 2022 World Games were an international multi-sport event held from July 7 to 17, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. They were the 11th World Games, a multi-sport event featuring disciplines of Olympic sports and other competitions that are not currently contested at the Olympic Games; the Games featured 3,600 athletes competing in 206 medal events over 30 sports. They were originally scheduled to be held in 2021, but were postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They were the second edition of the World Games to be hosted by the United States since their inaugural edition in 1981. Yannick Michiels
Yannick Michiels (born 29 July 1991) is a Belgian orienteer. He is the first Belgian orienteer to receive a medal at the World Orienteering Championships, receiving a bronze medal in the sprint discipline at the 2022 World Orienteering Championships in Denmark. Jerker Lysell (born 27 April 1989) is a Swedish orienteering competitor, and world champion in sprint. Career Lysell won a bronze medal in the sprint at the 2012 European Orienteering Championships in Falun, tying with Daniel Hubmann. He competed at the 2012 World Orienteering Championships. In the sprint competition he qualified for the final, where he placed 13th. Matthias Kyburz (born 5 March 1990) is a Swiss orienteering competitor, junior world champion, European champion and multiple world champion. On 16 April 2020, Kyburz attained the world record in quickest time reaching 50km on a treadmill, in a time of 2:56:35, breaking the record held by Florian Neuschwander.
