Ordination Of Women In The Church Of Scotland
The Church of Scotland was one of the first national churches to accept the ordination of women. In Presbyterianism, ordination is understood to be an ordinance rather than a sacrament; ministers and elders are ordained; until recently deacons were "commissioned" but now they too are ordained to their office in the Church of Scotland. Background Women were commissioned as deacons (or "deaconesses") from 1888, and allowed to preach from 1949. Serious debate on the ordination of women as ministers began when Mary Levison petitioned the General Assembly for ordination in 1963. She was eventually ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in 1978, and in 1991 became the first woman to be appointed as Queen's Chaplain. Susan Marjory Brown (born 12 December 1958) is a Scottish Presbyterian minister. She is the minister at Dornoch Cathedral and Honorary Chaplain to the Queen in Scotland. She was the first woman to take charge of a cathedral in the United Kingdom. Early life and education Brown was born on 12 December 1958 in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was educated at Penicuik High School, a non-denominational school in Midlothian. She went on to study at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with a Bachelor of Divinity (BD) degree in 1981 and completing a Diploma in Ministry (DipMin) in 1983. Elizabeth Lorna Hood, (born 21 April 1953) is a minister of the Church of Scotland. From 1979 to 2016, she was the Minister of North Parish Church, Renfrew. From 2013 to 2014, she also served as Moderator of its General Assembly. Early life and education Hood was born in Irvine, Ayrshire on 21 April 1953. She was educated at Kilmarnock Academy.
