Orange Fish Tears
''Orange Fish Tears'' is the debut album by trumpeter and composer Baikida Carroll, on which he is joined by saxophonist Oliver Lake, pianist Manuel Villardel, and percussionist Naná Vasconcelos. It was recorded during June 3–5, 1974, at Studio Palm in Paris, during a visit to France by members of the Black Artists Group. The album was initially released on vinyl in 1974 by Palm Records, and was reissued in 2023 in remastered form on vinyl, CD, and as a digital download, by the French label SouffleContinu Records. Reception JJ Skolnik of '' Bandcamp Daily'' called the recording "a rich and joyous album that more than deserves its place in the free jazz canon," and wrote: "''Orange Fish Tears'' is perhaps free jazz at its most approachable, but that in no way means that it's any less fiery than the more avant-garde side of things." Baikida Carroll
Baikida Carroll (born January 15, 1947) is an American jazz trumpeter. Carroll studied at Southern Illinois University and at the Armed Forces School of Music. Following this he became a member of the Black Artists Group in St. Louis, where he directed their big band. This group recorded in Europe in the 1970s. Biography Carroll was born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, and attended Vashon High School, Vashon and Soldan High School. He studied trumpet with Vernon Nashville. His early influences were Clark Terry and Lee Morgan. Carroll worked with the All City Jazz Band, whose members included Lester Bowie, J.D. Parran and James ”Jabbo” Ware. While still in high school he worked with Albert King, Little Milton, and Oliver Sain. Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term "avant-garde jazz". ''The Spoken Word'' is a live solo album by trumpeter and composer Baikida Carroll. It was recorded on April 22, 1977, and April 1, 1978, at Mapenzi in Berkeley, California, and was released on vinyl in 1979 as a double album by Hat Hut Records, with liner notes by Julius Hemphill. Reception In a review for ''DownBeat'', John Corbett noted the paucity of solo trumpet albums, and called ''The Spoken Word'' "a very special record, extremely approachable, lovely and refreshing." He praised the album's closing tracks, acknowledging Carroll's "beautiful, radiant tone," and "measured, phrase-by-phrase introspection," and writing: "With crickets in the background laying a pulse bed, Carroll plays gentle, sweet and sour melodies, adding Harmon mute, then bathing his soft calls in reverb." Oliver Lake
Oliver Lake (born September 14, 1942) is an American jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer, poet, and visual artist. He is known mainly for alto saxophone, but he also performs on soprano and flute. During the 1960s, Lake worked with the Black Artists Group in St. Louis. In 1977, he founded the World Saxophone Quartet with David Murray, Julius Hemphill, and Hamiet Bluiett. He worked in the group Trio 3 with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. He has appeared on more than 80 albums as a bandleader, co-leader, and side musician. He is the father of drummer Gene Lake. Juvenal de Holanda Vasconcelos, known as Naná Vasconcelos (2 August 1944 – 9 March 2016), was a Brazilian percussionist, vocalist and berimbau player, notable for his work as a solo artist on over two dozen albums, and as a backing musician with Pat Metheny, Don Cherry, Björk, Jan Garbarek, Egberto Gismonti, Gato Barbieri, and Milton Nascimento. Biography Vasconcelos was born in Recife, Brazil. Beginning from 1967 he joined many artists' works as a percussionist. Among his many collaborations, he contributed to four Jon Hassell albums from 1976 to 1980 (including '' Possible Musics'' by Brian Eno and Hassell), and later to several Pat Metheny Group works and Jan Garbarek concerts from early 1980s to early 1990s. The Black Artists Group (BAG) was a multidisciplinary arts collective that existed in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1968 to 1972. BAG is known for the convergence of free jazz and experimental theater. Tom Hull is an American music critic, web designer, and former software developer.
