The Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier is a French orchestra, associated with the Opéra national de Montpellier in Languedoc-Roussillon. The orchestra and opera are also associated with the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier created in 1985 by René Koering. History The orchestra was established in 1979, with 40 musicians, as the ''Orchestre Philharmonique de Montpellier'', with Louis Bertholon as its first music director and principal conductor. The orchestra was granted national status (''Orchestre national'') in 1999. In the 2000-2001 season, the Opéra de Montpellier and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Montpellier were merged into a single association, the ''Opéra Orchestre national Montpellier Occitanie''. The Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier, formerly the Festival de Radio France et de Montpellier, is a summer festival of opera and music held in Montpellier, France created in 1985. The music festival concentrates on classical music and jazz with about 100 events, including opera, concerts, films, and talks, most of which are free and located in the historic courtyards of the city or the modern concert halls of Le Corum. Michael Schønwandt
Michael Schønwandt (born 10 September 1953 in Frederiksberg) is a Danish conductor. In Denmark, he studied piano, theory, and composition, and later continued musical studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Biography In 1979, Schønwandt secured a post as 'permanent conductor' by the Royal Opera in Copenhagen. Schønwandt was Music Director of the Royal Danish Orchestra and the Copenhagen Opera House from 2000 to 2011. His work in contemporary opera has included conducting the world premiere productions of Poul Ruders' operas ''The Handmaid’s Tale'' and ''Dancer in the Dark''. Roderick Cox is a Germany-based American conductor. In 2018 he won the Sir Georg Solti Conductor award, the largest of its kind for an American conductor. He served as associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, a position he was appointed to in September 2016 after serving as assistant conductor for a year. Biography Cox was born in Macon, Georgia. He attended the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, and then later attended and graduated from Northwestern University with a master's degree in conducting in 2011. He is currently the artistic director and chief conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the music director of the Marseille Opera and the .
