Open Water Swimming
Open water swimming is a swimming discipline which takes place in outdoor bodies of water such as open oceans, lakes, and rivers. The beginning of the modern age of open water human swimming, swimming is sometimes taken to be May 3, 1810, when Lord Byron swam several miles to cross the Dardanelles, Hellespont (now known as the Dardanelles) from Europe to Asia. In the first edition of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, the swimming competition was held in open water. Angela Maurer (born 27 July 1975) is a German long-distance swimmer. Career Angela Maurer lives in Wiesbaden, where she was born. She swims for the ''SSV Undine 08 e.V. Mainz'' swimming club, and trains together with Dimitri Colupaev and Marc-Oliver Stein under Nikolai Evseev in Mainz. She has been studying at police technical college since 1 September 2007, and is a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate's state elite sports training programme. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing she achieved 4th place in the 10 km marathon swim, only a fraction of a second behind the bronze medallist Cassie Patten. In 2009, she won the 10 km open-water race at the German national swimming championships in Lindau with a time of 2:01:31.43, ensuring her place at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome. Samuel Menegon de Bona (born 1 October 1990 in Porto Alegre) is a Brazilian swimmer, who specialized in the open water marathon. He trained at Grêmio Náutico União, in Porto Alegre. In April 2011, he won, for the first time, the Travessia dos Fortes (the most important competition of the calendar of aquatic marathons in Brazil). At the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, de Bona placed 36th in the 5 km marathon, with a time of 1:01:20.9, 44th in the 10 km marathon, with a time of 2:02:17.2, and 16th in the 25 km marathon, with a time of 5:27:38.1. Allan Lopes Mamédio do Carmo (born 3 August 1989) is a Brazilian swimmer, who specialized in open water marathon. He is considered one of the fastest professional open water swimmers in the world, finishing near the top of FINA World Cup races for the 10 km marathon. He also won a bronze medal for his category at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Kalliopi "Kelly" Araouzou (born 6 March 1991) is a Greek competitive swimmer. She participates in the open water events. Career In 2010, she won the gold medal in the team event at the European Open Water Championships in Balatonfüred alongside her teammates Spyridon Gianniotis and Antonios Fokaidis. She won the silver medal at the same tournament in the women's 5 km event behind Ekaterina Seliverstova. She won the bronze medal in the 10 km event at the 2011 World Cup race in Setúbal.
