Ontario (Amtrak Station)
Ontario station is an Amtrak train station in Ontario, California, located on the Union Pacific Railroad Alhambra Subdivision. It is served by the thrice-weekly '' Sunset Limited''/''Texas Eagle''. The station has a covered, open-air pavilion built by the city in 1991. Of the 73 California stations served by Amtrak, Ontario was the 70th-busiest in fiscal year 2019, boarding or detraining an average of approximately 11 passengers daily (though the station does not receive daily service). History Ontario was initially a flag stop on the Southern Pacific Sunset Route. Local streetcar service was provided nearby at the corner of Euclid and Emporia by the Ontario and San Antonio Heights Railroad Company by 1897. Ontario is a city in southwestern San Bernardino County in the U.S. state of California, east of downtown Los Angeles and west of downtown San Bernardino, the county seat. Located in the western part of the Inland Empire metropolitan area, it lies just east of Los Angeles County and is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Alhambra Subdivision
The Alhambra (, ; ar, الْحَمْرَاء, Al-Ḥamrāʾ, , ) is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world, in addition to containing notable examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture. A side platform (also known as a marginal platform or a single-face platform) is a platform positioned to the side of one or more railway tracks or guideways at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. Sunset Limited
The ''Sunset Limited'' is an Amtrak passenger train that for most of its history has operated between New Orleans and Los Angeles, over the nation's second transcontinental route. However, up until Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it operated between and Los Angeles, and 1993–96, continued on to Miami (via the ''Silver Meteor''s route). It is the oldest continuously operating named train in the United States, introduced in 1894 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, and acquired by Amtrak upon its formation in 1971. Along with the ''Cardinal'', this train is one of Amtrak's two long-distance services which operate thrice weekly. Texas Eagle
The ''Texas Eagle'' is a daily passenger train route operated by Amtrak between Chicago and San Antonio in the central and western United States. Prior to 1988, the train was known as the ''Eagle''. Trains #21 (southbound) and 22 (northbound) also convey a sleeping car and a coach (designated internally as Trains #421 and 422) to/from the ''Sunset Limited'' between San Antonio and Los Angeles on the days that tri-weekly train operates. However, the Texas Eagle itself was reduced to tri-weekly service from October 2020 to March 2021 and again from January 2022 until March 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sunset Route
The Sunset Route is a main line of the Union Pacific Railroad running between Southern California and New Orleans, Louisiana. The name traces its origins to the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, a Southern Pacific Railway subsidiary which was known as the ''Sunset Route'' as early as 1874. The line was built by several different companies and largely consolidated under Southern Pacific. Upon Southern Pacific Railroad's merger with Union Pacific in 1996, less than 25% of the route was double-tracked. Efforts to expand double-trackage were ongoing as of the late 2000s and early 2010s, with over seventy percent of the route having two tracks by 2012. Ontario And San Antonio Heights Railroad Company
Ontario and San Antonio Heights Railroad Company is a former railway company which operated in Ontario, California. The company's service is noted for using a unique Gravity Mule Car from 1887 to 1895. The mule-car served Ontario until 1895, when the line was electrified by new owners, Ontario Electric Company. It was occasionally used afterwards, when the electric generator in the powerhouse was flooded. The Ontario Electric Company was merged into the Pacific Light & Power Corporation in 1908, and the extension to Pomona commenced work in 1909, which opened New Year's Day 1911. The railroad would go on to be acquired by the Pacific Electric on April 13, 1912.
