The Armed
The Armed (often iconized as ⋈) are an American anonymous hardcore punk collective formed in Detroit, Michigan in 2009. They often feature guests including instrumentalists on their releases. These include Chris Pennie, Baptists (band), Nick Yacyshyn, Ben Koller, and Rough Francis, Urian Hackney. Converge (band), Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou has been involved in the recording and production of all their releases. History Formation and ''These Are Lights'' (2009) Most of the members of The Armed previously played in another band, Slicer Dicer, which, according to Tony Wolski, became The Armed. Kurt Ballou (born February 1, 1974) is an American musician and producer based in Massachusetts, best known as the guitarist for hardcore punk band Converge and for his prolific recording and production work at his own GodCity Studio. Early and personal life Kurt Ballou started playing saxophone in elementary school. He performed in jazz band, concert band and orchestra, dabbling between baritone saxophone, bassoon and bass clarinet. Ballou was accepted to join the Hartford School of Music, but he opted to study aerospace engineering instead. His father used to have a guitar that Ballou played occasionally, but it did not interest him until a school friend gave him Slayer tapes around the age of sixteen. He is a vegan and follows a straight edge lifestyle. Career Since 1990, Kurt Ballou has played in the metalcore band Converge. From 1996 to 2000 Ballou played in the hardcore punk band The Huguenots. ''Ultrapop'' is the fourth studio album from the anonymous post-hardcore collective The Armed, released on April 16, 2021, by Sargent House. Background and release Prior to the release of ''Ultrapop'' on April 16, 2021, two singles were released. "All Futures", the first single, was released on February 4, and "Average Death" was released on 2 March. The album was co-produced by Dan Greene and Ben Chisholm, an established collaborator with Chelsea Wolfe. The executive producer was long-time collaborator Kurt Ballou. The album is their first release with the label Sargent House. Talking about Chisholm in an interview with ''New Noise Magazine'', band vocalist/lyricist Cara Drolshagen claimed "he’s a genius who understands the math behind the music, and the opportunity to reconfigure its numbers in new ways, to find different solutions." Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. Ben Koller
Ben Koller (born July 29, 1980) is an American drummer who has played with Converge, Mutoid Man, Killer Be Killed and All Pigs Must Die. He started playing a full drum kit at age 14. Musical career Early bands (1997–1999) Koller played in the bands Where's Ben? and Bastian, before playing in the grindcore band Force Fed Glass. He started playing for the band in 1997. Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, who is also a successful producer, recorded an album for Force Fed Glass. Ballou later started a side project called Blue/Green Heart and selected Koller as his drummer having already been familiar with his talent from Force Fed Glass.
