1943 Australian Federal Election
The 1943 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 21 August 1943. All 74 seats in the House of Representatives and 19 of the 36 seats in the Senate were up for election. The incumbent Labor Party, led by Prime Minister John Curtin, defeated the opposition Country–UAP coalition led by Arthur Fadden in a landslide. Fadden, the leader of the Country Party, was serving as Leader of the Opposition despite the Country Party holding fewer seats in parliament than the United Australia Party (UAP). He was previously the Prime Minister in August 1941, after he was chosen by the coalition parties to lead the government after the forced resignation of Prime Minister Robert Menzies, the UAP leader. However, he stayed in office for only six weeks before the two independents who held the balance of power joined Labor in voting down his budget. Alfred Anderson (entrepreneur)
Alfred William Anderson (4 June 1888 – 6 August 1956) was an Australian butcher and entrepreneur. Anderson was born in East Brighton in Melbourne to butcher John Charles Anderson and Elizabeth, ''née'' Jervis, and was raised a Methodist. The family moved to Western Australia, and the younger Anderson left school at 14. He opened a butchery in Perth in 1911. On 22 June 1912 he married Elizabeth Maud Gilbert at St Luke's Anglican Church in Cottesloe. Anderson moved to Sydney in 1918 and became a sausage manufacturer, registering his own companies A. W. Anderson Pty Ltd and Anderson's Sausages Pty Ltd. By 1923, with branches across Sydney and Newcastle, he also had an interest in the Homebush Bay abattoirs, and in 1924 set up works in Lismore, Tuncester and Byron Bay. He was able to prosper during the Great Depression and acquired Queensland meatworks at Wallangarra and Karumba. ''The National Advocate'' was a daily newspaper published in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, between 1889 and 1963. Newspaper history The newspaper was established on 28 September 1889, co-founded by Australian businessman James Rutherford as a vehicle to put forward a protectionist viewpoint. The newspaper's board of directors included Francis Halliday who was at that time was president of the Bathurst National Protection League. The ''National Advocate'' had a reputation as the local mouthpiece of the Australian Labor Party, in contrast to the conservative-leaning '' Bathurst Times''. For many years its manager was John Percival, a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Percival was forced to resign in 1923 after being caught misusing company money. In 1920, federal Nationalist MP Archdale Parkhill brought a libel suit against the ''National Advocate''.
