Omalonyx Pattersonae
''Omalonyx'' is a genus of air-breathing land snails, Terrestrial animal, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod molluscs in the family (biology), family Succineidae, the amber snails. These snails are amphibious, living very close to water and moving around both on emergent plants and also on submergent plant, submerged aquatic plants. Distribution Species of the genus ''Omalonyx'' occur in the Caribbean Islands, and they are also amply distributed throughout South America. Species Species within the genus ''Omalonyx'' include: * ''Omalonyx brasiliensis'' (Simroth, 1896) * ''Omalonyx convexus'' (Heynemann, 1868) * ''Omalonyx matheronii'' (Potiez & Michaud, 1835) or ''Omalonyx matheroni'' (Potiez & Michaud, 1838)Robinson D. Omalonyx Convexus
''Omalonyx convexus'' is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Succineidae, the amber snails. This species of snail is found on emergent vegetation in lentic environments, and also submerged among macrophytes. Distribution The distribution of ''Omalonyx convexus'' includes Brazil. Description ''Omalonyx convexus'' can be up to 4 cm in total length. Tegument and mantle coloring varies between milky-white, orange and beige. The tegument and mantle have irregularly sized and distributed blackish spots, which, depending on their quantity, can sometimes give the animal a dark gray appearance. Beige was the most commonly observed coloring (Arruda & Thomé). Because of their translucence, milky-white individuals sometimes display the same coloring as the substrate. Because of its wide variability in color, ''Omalonyx convexus'' can be confused with other ''Omalonyx'' species: '' Omalonyx matheroni'', ''Omalonyx pattersonae'' ...

Gastropod
The gastropods (), commonly known as snails and slugs, belong to a large taxonomic class of invertebrates within the phylum Mollusca called Gastropoda (). This class comprises snails and slugs from saltwater, from freshwater, and from land. There are many thousands of species of sea snails and slugs, as well as freshwater snails, freshwater limpets, and land snails and slugs. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. The fossil history of this class goes back to the Late Cambrian. , 721 families of gastropods are known, of which 245 are extinct and appear only in the fossil record, while 476 are currently extant with or without a fossil record. Gastropoda (previously known as univalves and sometimes spelled "Gasteropoda") are a major part of the phylum Mollusca, and are the most highly diversified class in the phylum, with 65,000 to 80,000 living snail and slug species. The anatomy, behavior, feeding, and re ...

Mantle (mollusc)
The mantle (also known by the Latin word pallium meaning mantle, robe or cloak, adjective pallial) is a significant part of the anatomy of molluscs: it is the dorsal body wall which covers the visceral mass and usually protrudes in the form of flaps well beyond the visceral mass itself. In many species of molluscs the epidermis of the mantle secretes calcium carbonate and conchiolin, and creates a shell. In sea slugs there is a progressive loss of the shell and the mantle becomes the dorsal surface of the animal. The words mantle and pallium both originally meant cloak or cape, see mantle (vesture). This anatomical structure in molluscs often resembles a cloak because in many groups the edges of the mantle, usually referred to as the ''mantle margin'', extend far beyond the main part of the body, forming flaps, double-layered structures which have been adapted for many different uses, including for example, the siphon. Mantle cavity The ''mantle cavity'' is a central fea ...

Gastropod Shell
The gastropod shell is part of the body of a Gastropoda, gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage. Some gastropods appear shell-less (slugs) but may have a remnant within the mantle, or in some cases the shell is reduced such that the body cannot be retracted within it (semi-slug). Some snails also possess an operculum that seals the opening of the shell, known as the Aperture (mollusc), aperture, which provides further protection. The study of mollusc shells is known as conchology. The biological study of gastropods, and other molluscs in general, is malacology. Shell morphology terms vary by species group. Shell layers The gastropod shell has three major layers secreted by the Mantle (mollusc), mantle. The calcareous central layer, tracum, is typically made of calcium carbonate precipitated into an organic matrix known as c ...

Zoologische Mededelingen
''Zoologische Mededelingen'' was a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal publishing papers and monographs on animal systematics. The publisher was the National Museum of Natural History Naturalis in the Netherlands. The first issue appeared in 1915, as the official journal of Naturalis' predecessor, the Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie. Earlier, the museum published ''Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle des Pays-Bas'' (volumes I-XIV, 1862-1908) and ''Notes from the Leyden Museum'' (volumes I-XXXVI, 1879-1914), which mainly covered the fauna of the Netherlands and the former Dutch colonies. ''Zoologische Mededelingen'' was indexed in ''The Zoological Record'' and ''BIOSIS''. A complete backlist of published volumes is presented on the institutional repository of Naturalis. The last article was published in 2014 and the journal was merged into the ''European Journal of Taxonomy The ''European Journal of Taxonomy'' is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal for descrip ...

Submergent Plant
Aquatic plants are plants that have adapted to living in aquatic environments (saltwater or freshwater). They are also referred to as hydrophytes or macrophytes to distinguish them from algae and other microphytes. A macrophyte is a plant that grows in or near water and is either emergent, submergent, or floating. In lakes and rivers macrophytes provide cover for fish, substrate for aquatic invertebrates, produce oxygen, and act as food for some fish and wildlife. Macrophytes are primary producers and are the basis of the food web for many organisms. They have a significant effect on soil chemistry and light levels as they slow down the flow of water and capture pollutants and trap sediments. Excess sediment will settle into the benthos aided by the reduction of flow rates caused by the presence of plant stems, leaves and roots. Some plants have the capability of absorbing pollutants into their tissue. Seaweeds are multicellular marine algae and, although their ecological i ...
