Old Blues RFC
Founded in 1873, Old Blues RFC is an English rugby union club. As of the 20/21 season the 1st XV competes in RFU Surrey 2 and the 2nd XV competes iSurrey Combination 1 North Both sides play home matches in Motspur Park, South West London. The club welcomes players from all over London and Surrey operating three senior teams during the season and a Vets (35+) team on select weekends. During the off season the club tours annually and enters several 7's tournaments in the Surrey and South London area. The Old Blues have recently invested heavily in new playing and social facilities, with a balcony overlooking the pitches completed in 2022. With some of the best pitches and facilities outside of the national league Old Blues are looking to expand and grow to meet their potential. Training is on Wednesdays 19:30 - 21:00. The Surrey County Rugby Football Union is the union responsible for rugby union in the county of Surrey, England, and is one of the constituent bodies of the national Rugby Football Union having been formed in 1879. History Early years of County representative team The earliest recorded game played by a team purporting to represent Surrey under rugby union auspices was played before the Surrey County Club has been formed. This was played on 21 February 1878 against Middlesex and won by Surrey with a try scored by AS Trevor. Motspur Park
Motspur Park, also known locally as West Barnes, is a residential suburb in south-west London, in the New Malden district. It straddles the boroughs of Kingston upon Thames and Merton. Motspur Park owes its identity to the railway station of the same name, opened in 1925, which has six trains an hour to London Waterloo, and to the adjacent parade of small shops. Three prominent gas holders, which were used to store the consumer gas supply for south-west London, stand just south of the shopping parade and can be seen from a wide area. Two of London's minor natural watercourses flow through Motspur Park: Beverley Brook runs south to north through the centre and its tributary the Pyl Brook runs parallel to the east in shallow depressions in the land. The London Borough of Merton () is a borough in Southwest London, England. The borough was formed under the London Government Act 1963 in 1965 by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Mitcham, the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon and the Merton and Morden Urban District, all formerly within Surrey. Promoted teams move up to Counties 1 Surrey/Sussex while relegated teams drop down to Counties 3 Surrey. A varsity match is a fixture (especially of a sporting event or team) between two university teams, particularly Oxford and Cambridge. The Scottish Varsity rugby match between the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh at Murrayfield stadium is claimed to be the oldest recurring varsity match in the world, having been played since the 1860s.
