Ohio State Route 690
State Route 690 (SR 690) is a north–south state highway in southeastern Ohio, a U.S. state. The southern terminus of SR 690 is at the concurrency of US 50 and SR 32 about east of Athens in the community of Canaanville. Its northern terminus is at SR 550 approximately west of Amesville. This two-lane state highway was established in the late 1930s. Running entirely within Athens County, SR 690 passes through Wayne National Forest and serves as a quicker route connecting SR 550 to the Athens Bypass. Route description SR 690 runs exclusively within Athens County. This state highway is not included as a part of the National Highway System, a network of highways deemed to be most important for the economy, mobility and defense of the nation. Amesville, Ohio
Amesville is a village in Athens County, Ohio, United States, located on Federal Creek. The population was 154 at the 2010 census. History Amesville was laid out in 1837. The village derives its name from Fisher Ames who was instrumental in gaining federal support for the Ohio Company of Associates which managed much of the settlement in the area. Amesville is perhaps best known for the Coonskin Library. At an 1803 town meeting—held to discuss roads—settlers talked about their desire for books and their lack of money to pay for them. Most of the business was done by barter, so little money was in circulation. However, the surrounding forest had pelts that could be sold in the East to buy books. In the spring of 1804, Samuel B. Canaanville, Ohio
Canaanville is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Canaan Township, Athens County, Ohio, Athens County, Ohio, United States. It has an elevation of and is located at . According to the Centennial Atlas of Athens County (1905), the community originally called Canaanville was slightly to the west, west of where Ohio State Route 690 now intersects with US Route 50. There still is an historic house at that location, at the intersection of McAfee Road with the connector road to US-50 at County Road 24A. The community now called Canaanville was then called Detroit. Both communities were originally on the railroad: at first, the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, which was later the B&O Railroad. Ohio State Route 550
State Route 550 (SR 550) is an east–west state highway in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The western terminus of SR 550 is at an interchange with U.S. Route 33 (US 33) just north of the city limits of Athens, immediately south of the southern terminus of SR 13. Wayne National Forest
The Wayne National Forest is located in the south-eastern part of the US state of Ohio, in the Unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. It is the only national forest in Ohio. Forest headquarters are located between The Plains and Nelsonville, Ohio, on US Route 33, overlooking the Hocking River. The originally forested land was cleared for agricultural and lumbering use in the late 18th and 19th century, but years of poor timbering and agricultural practices led to severe erosion and poor soil composition. The Wayne National Forest was started as part of a reforestation program. The forest comprises three administrative and purchase units: Athens, Marietta, and Ironton.
