The Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) is the administrative department of the Ohio state government responsible for the protection and safety of residents and visitors. The Department of Public Safety's headquarters is located in Columbus, Ohio. History On May 19, 1953, Amended House Bill 243 created the Ohio Department of Highway Safety, consisting of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and Ohio State Highway Patrol, effective October 2, 1953. On September 24, 1992, the department was renamed the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Columbus, Ohio
Columbus () is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. With a 2020 census population of 905,748, it is the 14th-most populous city in the U.S., the second-most populous city in the Midwest, after Chicago, and the third-most populous state capital. Columbus is the county seat of Franklin County; it also extends into Delaware and Fairfield counties. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (abbreviated BMV) is an agency of the Ohio Department of Public Safety that registers motor vehicles and issues license plates and driver's licenses in the U.S. state of Ohio.
