The privacy commissioner of Canada (french: Commissaire à la protection de la vie privée du Canada) is a non-partisan ombudsman and officer of the Parliament of Canada. The commissioner investigates complaints regarding violations of the federal ''Privacy Act'', which deals with personal information held by the Government of Canada or the ''Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Ac''t (PIPEDA), which deals with personal information held in federally regulated private sector industries. The commissioner reports to Parliament. Philippe Dufresne has served as the ninth and current privacy commissioner of Canada since he was appointed on June 27, 2022. Canadian Human Rights Commission
The Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) was established in 1977 by the government of Canada. It is empowered under the ''Canadian Human Rights Act'' to investigate and to try to settle complaints of discrimination in employment and in the provision of services within federal jurisdiction. The CHRC is also empowered under the ''Employment Equity Act'' to ensure that federally-regulated employers provide equal opportunities for four designated groups: women, Aboriginal people, the disabled, and visible minorities. The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC; french: Commissaire à l’information et à la protection de la vie privée de l'Ontario) was established as an officer of the Legislature by Ontario's ''Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act'' (FIPPA, 1987), which came into effect on January 1, 1988. The current commissioner is Patricia Kosseim. Mandate The commissioner is appointed by and reports to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and is independent of the government of the day. Daniel Therrien is a Canadian lawyer and civil servant who was the privacy commissioner of Canada from June 5, 2014 to June 26, 2022. Education Therrien holds a Bachelor of Arts and a law degree from the University of Ottawa. He was called to the Quebec bar in 1981. Career Prior to his appointment as privacy commissioner, Therrien held various positions within the Canadian federal government. Chantal Bernier
Chantal Bernier was the interim Privacy Commissioner of Canada from 2013 to 2014. Prior to her position, Bernier joined the Bar of Quebec in 1978 before starting her Canadian government experience in the early 1990s. During the early to late 1990s, she was an advisor for the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada and Department of Justice. Jennifer Stoddart (born 1949) was the sixth Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Early life and education Stoddart was born in 1949 in Toronto. In 1967 she graduated from Neuchâtel Junior College in Switzerland. Fluent in five languages, she studied Quebec social history and received a Master of Arts in history from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Robert Marleau
Robert Marleau , is a former Canadian federal public servant and former Information Commissioner of Canada. Beginning in 1970, Marleau served 31 years in the Parliament of Canada, 13 of which were as the Clerk of the House of Commons from July 1987 to July 2000. George Radwanski (February 28, 1947 – September 18, 2014) was a Canadian public servant, policy adviser, journalist and author. Journalism In 1965 he began working as a reporter for the ''Montreal Gazette'' subsequently becoming a columnist, associate editor and national affairs columnist for the paper.
