Offaly (Dáil Constituency)
Offaly was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas, from 2016 to 2020. The constituency elected three deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs). The method of election was proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History and boundaries The Constituency Commission proposed in its 2012 report that at the next general election a new constituency called Offaly be created. The report proposed changes to the constituencies of Ireland so as to reduce the total number of TDs from 166 to 158. It was established by the Electoral (Amendment) (Dáil Constituencies) Act 2013. The constituency incorporated all of County Offaly from the previous Laois–Offaly constituency, and additionally twenty-four electoral divisions from Tipperary North. Dáil Constituencies
There are 39 multi-member electoral districts, known as Dáil constituencies, that elect 160 TDs (members of parliament), to Dáil Éireann, Ireland's lower house of the Oireachtas, or parliament, by means of the single transferable vote, to a maximum term of five years. Electoral law Article 16.2 of the Constitution of Ireland outlines the requirements for constituencies. The total number of TDs is to be no more than one TD representing twenty thousand and no less than one TD representing thirty thousand of the population, and the ratio should be the same in each constituency, as far as practicable, avoiding malapportionment. Under the Constitution, constituencies are to be revised at least once in every twelve years in accordance with the census reports, which are compiled by the Central Statistics Office every five years. Borrisokane
Borrisokane () is a town in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is situated at the junction of the N52 and N65 national secondary roads. At the 2016 census, it had a population of 942. The Ballyfinboy River flows through the town on its way to Lough Derg, to the west. It is also a civil parish in the historical barony of Ormond Lower and an Ecclesiastical parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe. History During the Norman invasion of Ireland, the area now known as Borrisokane was the property of the O'Carrolls of Ely who claimed to be descendants of the ''Clan or Cian'' or the ''Cianacht''. The O’Kennedys were another significant ruling family, owning tower houses in the surrounding townlands. John Leahy (Irish Politician)
John Leahy is an Irish independent politician who served as leader of Renua from 2016 to 2019. A local councillor for Birr, on Offaly County Council, he was first elected in 2009 as an Independent. He was re-elected topping the poll in 2014. Leahy joined Renua at its foundation in 2015 and stood unsuccessfully in the 2016 general election. He was eliminated on the fifth count with 6,588 votes. Leahy was elected leader of Renua on 3 September 2016, succeeding Lucinda Creighton. Prior to being leader of Renua, Leahy worked as a GAA Coaching and Games Promotion Officer, he has also contributed as a hurling analyst on Midlands 103. Marcella Corcoran Kennedy (born 7 January 1963) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as a Minister of State from 2016 to 2017. She served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 2011 to 2020. Carol Nolan
Carol Nolan (born 23 May 1978) is an Irish Independent politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Laois–Offaly constituency since the 2020 general election, and previously from 2016 to 2020 for the Offaly constituency. Early and personal life Nolan was born in Tullamore in 1978, but she is a native of Cadamstown, County Offaly. Nolan was educated at Mary Immaculate College and NUI Galway. She was a primary school teacher for 12 years. Nolan was also principal of Gaelscoil Thromaire in County Laois for three years. Ballymackey () is a townland and a civil parish in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is located between Toomevara and Cloughjordan It is in the Dáil constituency of Offaly which incorporates 24 electoral divisions that were previously in the constituency of North Tipperary. Ardcrony
Ardcroney, officially Ardcrony () is a village and townland in County Tipperary, Ireland, north of Nenagh. It also forms a civil parish in the historical barony of Ormond Lower. It is halfway between Nenagh and Borrisokane on the N52 road. Buildings of note Ardcroney church is a T-plan gable-fronted church, built in 1838. Along with a later (c.1975) detached round bell tower with conical slate roof, it is listed as a protected structure by Tipperary County Council (RPS Ref S583). The local Church of Ireland church was moved to Bunratty folk park where it was unveiled in 1998.
