O'Malley Case
The O'Malley Case was the criminal prosecution of the Chief Magistrate of Philadelphia on charges of malfeasance, or serious misconduct in office by a public officer. The trials began in 1948 and continued into early 1949. The defendant was John J O'Malley, Chief Magistrate of Philadelphia; the lead prosecutor was Laurence Howard Eldredge; the first assistant prosecutor was Robert Lowe Kunzig; The second assistant prosecutor was Henry W. Laurence Howard Eldredge (March 18, 1902 – July 17, 1982) was a lawyer, educator and author. His specialty was the law of torts. Early life and education Eldredge was born in Cold Spring, Cape May County, New Jersey on March 18, 1902 to Irvin H. and Mary Louise (Benton) Eldridge. He received a Bachelor of Science from Lafayette College in 1924 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Pennsylvania in 1927. In 1970, he completed a Doctor of Letters. Career Eldredge was a reporter for the Public Ledger in Philadelphia from 1924-25 and then a writer of syndicated news articles. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1927 and worked as an associated with Montgomery and McCracken until 1938. He was a member of the firm Norris, Lex, Hart & Eldredge from 1944 to 1956. Robert Lowe Kunzig (October 31, 1918 – February 21, 1982) was an American attorney, HUAC counsel, and judge of the United States Court of Claims. Background Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kunzig received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1942. Career Kunzig served as a captain in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was a civilian war crimes prosecutor for the United States Government from 1946 to 1947. Lemuel Braddock Schofield was born in Warren, Pennsylvania in 1892.
