Boyle / O'Boyle is a surname of Irish origin. It is anglised from the Gaelic Ó Baoighill/Ó Baoill. The clan was founded by a Donegal chieftain, Aneisleis Ó Baoighill, the grandson of Baoghal. The derivation of the Gaelic/Irish is uncertain, and has been translated as "Peril" or "Danger", "Son of the rash one" or more positively "having profitable pledges" (from the Irish word geall, meaning "pledge"). Patrick O'Boyle (American Bishop)
Patrick Aloysius O'Boyle (July 18, 1896 – August 10, 1987) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the first resident Archbishop of Washington from 1948 to 1973, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1967. Early life and education Patrick O'Boyle was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Michael and Mary (née Muldoon) O'Boyle, who were Irish immigrants. His father was originally from Glenties, County Donegal, and in 1889 came to the United States, where he settled at Bedford, New York. His mother moved to New York City from County Mayo in 1879, and later married O'Boyle in December 1893. Shortly afterwards they moved to Scranton, where Michael became a steelworker; they had a daughter who died during infancy in 1895. Ian O'Boyle (born 6 March 1984) is an Irish former basketball player. He played nine seasons in the Irish Super League as well as four seasons in the South Australian Premier League, where he won a championship. He has represented the Irish national team. Thomas Joseph O'Boyle (August 21, 1917 – July 19, 2000) was an American football player, coach, scout, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Southwest Missouri State College—now known as Missouri State University—from 1947 to 1948 and at Tulane University from 1962 to 1965, compiling a career college football coaching record of 22–37–2. At Southwest Missouri State he was also the school's athletic director. Shaun O'Boyle is a science communicator, podcast producer and activist, best known for his work to promote science and to improve representation of LGBTQ+ scientists.
