Nørrebrohallen (English: the hall of Nørrebro) is a Danish sports complex in Nørrebro, Copenhagen. It was formerly known as Nørrebro Remise (English: Nørrebro Roundhouse) because it worked as a roundhouse for the now-defunct Copenhagen Tram until 1972 when all tram activities stopped. The facility is owned and run by the Copenhagen Municipality. Stevnsgade Basketball (also known as Stevnsgade, Stevnsgade Supermen, Supermen and SBBK) is a Denmark, Danish Basketball, basketball team located in Nørrebro, Copenhagen. Stevnsgade is one of the most winningest teams in Danish men's basketball history, having won 3 national titles (1979, 1980 and 1995) and 4 Danish Men's Basketball Cup, domestic cups (1980, 1987, 1993 and 1994). The Stevnsgade women's team has won the Danish Women's Basketball Cup, Danish Cup 6 times. Vilhelm Friederichsen
Vilhelm Heinrich Friederichsen (6 May 1841 - 5 March 1913) was a Danish architect. Early life and education Friederichsen was born in Copenhagen, the son of carpenter Peter Wilhelm Friederichsen (1817-74) and Helene Theresia Seerup (1821-75). He apprenticed as a carpenter and attended the Technical Institute in Læderstræde in the winter time for three years before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1856 where he studied under Gustav Friedrich Hetsch and Christian Hansen. He won the small silver medal in 1864 and graduated in 1865. Career Friederichsen and Peter Christian Bønecke won third prize in the competition for the new Royal Danish Theatre in 1871 and specialized in the design of hospitals. He designed the first phase of the Øresund Hospital in 1875-76 and the Blegdam Hospital in 1878-80. Nørrebro (, ) is one of the 10 official districts of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is northwest of the city centre, beyond the location of the old Northern Gate (''Nørreport''), which, until dismantled in 1856, was near the current Nørreport station. Railway Roundhouse
A railway roundhouse is a building with a circular or semicircular shape used by railways for servicing and storing locomotives. Traditionally, though not always the case today, these buildings surrounded or were adjacent to a turntable. Overview Early steam locomotives normally traveled forwards only. Although reverse operations capabilities were soon built into locomotive mechanisms, the controls were normally optimized for forward travel, and the locomotives often could not operate as well in reverse. Some passenger cars, such as observation cars, were also designed as late as the 1960s for operations in a particular direction. Trams In Copenhagen
The Copenhagen tram system was a tramway network in service from 22 October 1863 - 22 April 1972 in and around Copenhagen, Denmark. The first lines were horse-drawn trams which were replaced in the 1880s by steam-powered tramways. In the 1890s electrical trams were introduced. The trams were operated by a number of private companies until 1911 when the city took over the operation of most of the system, followed by a full take-over some years later. The system was closed on April 22, 1972 at a time when streetcar systems across Europe and North America were being closed because they were not seen as a modern transportation solution and they were largely replaced by buses and private cars. Thorvald Sørensen
Thorvald (Thorwald) Julius Sørensen (4 July 1902 – 21 June 1973) was a Danish botanist and evolutionary biologist. Biography Sørensen was professor at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University 1953–1955 and at the University of Copenhagen 1955–1972. He was director of the Copenhagen Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum during the same period. Thorvald Sørensen spent the years 1931–1935, based on Ella Island, studying plants in the then little known North-East Greenland. He published the botanical research of the Three-year Expedition to East Greenland. He also published a doctoral thesis on the annual phenological rhythm of the High Arctic plant species, including the pollination of their flowers (1941).
