Nõo
Nõo is a Populated places in Estonia, small borough ( et, alevik) in Tartu County, in southern Estonia. It's located about 15 km southwest of the city of Tartu by the Tartu–Valga, Estonia, Valga–Riga railway and the European route E264 (also known as Via Hanseatica). Nõo is the administrative centre of Nõo Parish. As of 2011 Estonia Census, 2011 Census, the settlement's population was 1,492. Nõo was first mentioned in 1319 as ''Nughen'' and as a separate church parish in 1483, during the times when it belonged to the Bishopric of Dorpat. Nõo St. Laurence Lutheran Church is believed to have been built around the 1250s to 1260s. According to Bengt Gottfried Forselius schooling took place in Nõo already in 1686. Since 1688 a local parish school has been working in Nõo. In 1953 the primary school was reorganized as a secondary school. Harald Tammur
Harald Tammur (5 January 1917 Varnja, Kavastu Parish, Tartu County – 12 May 2001 Tartu) was an Estonian Lutheran clergyman. Tammur studied theology at the University of Tartu between 1936 and 1940, philosophy from 1940 until 1943 and again theology in 1943. In the summer of 1943, during the German occupation of Estonia, together with two other members of the Estonian Students' Society, he hid the first Estonian national flag from occupying forces. He was arrested in 1944 by the ''Sicherheitspolizei'', the German security police, and transferred to the Stutthof concentration camp. Released in 1945, he returned to Estonia, which was by then occupied and annexed by the Soviet Union, and was then arrested by Soviet NKVD officers in Tartu the same year and placed with the gulag camp system in Kemerovo Oblast in Siberia. Martin Lipp
Martin Lipp ( in Vooru, Viljandi Parish – 8 March 1923 in Tallinn) was an Estonian poet. He is best known as the author of the poem "The Estonian Flag", which was set to the music of the then young composer Enn Võrk. That song became as popular to the Estonian people as the "Marseillaise" was to the French in the times of the French Revolution and also played an important role during the time of the Estonian "Singing Revolution" in the late 1980s. Ural (computer)
Ural ( rus, Урал) is a series of mainframe computers built in the former Soviet Union. History The Ural was developed at the Electronic Computer Producing Manufacturer of Penza in the Soviet Union and was produced between 1956 and 1964. The computer was widely used in the 1960s, mainly in the socialist countries, though some were also exported to Western Europe and Latin America. The Indian Statistical Institute purchased an Ural-1 in 1958. When the University of Tartu received a new computer in 1965, its old Ural 1 was moved to a science-based secondary school, the Nõo Reaalgümnaasium, making the latter one of the first Soviet secondary schools to receive a computer. Eduard Tubin
Eduard Tubin ( – 17 November 1982) was an Estonian composer, conductor, and choreographer. Life Tubin was born in Torila, Tartu County, Governorate of Livonia, then part of the Russian Empire. Both his parents were music lovers, and his father played trombone in the village band. His first taste of music came at school where he learned the flute. Later, his father swapped a cow for a piano, and the young Eduard soon became known in the village for his playing. Eduard also played flute in the village orchestra. Tubin entered the Tartu Teacher's College in the newly independent Estonia in 1920. It was here he began to take an interest in composition. In 1924 he was admitted to the Tartu Higher Music School starting his studies under the guidance of the famous Estonian composer Heino Eller. Ado Reinvald
Ado Reinvald (3 December 1847 Viljandi Parish, Viljandi County – 8 February 1922) was an Estonian poet. He was the owner of Ilissa farm near Tarvastu. Because of the initiative of Reinvald, the farm was transformed into the local cultural centre. In 1894, the centre went bankrupt. Reinvald died in 1922 and is buried at Raadi Cemetery in Tartu. Several of Reinvald's poems have been set to music.
