Nyla Innuksuk
Nyla Innuksuk is a Canadian film director, writer, and producer, and virtual reality content creator. She is the CEO of Mixtape VR. Early life Innuksuk was born in Igloolik and spent her childhood growing up in Iqaluit. She attended Ryerson University, where she received a degree in film production in 2009. Film work Innuksuk has mainly worked on short documentary and fiction films focusing on Inuit and Indigenous peoples' stories. Her films are portraits of communities and community members in the Arctic, with a strong commitment to including community members in production phases of a film. Her films often also have a focus on the youth in Inuit communities, and the social problems they face. Innuksuk has also won Canada's Pitch This competition by Telefilm Canada for her project titled ''Qalupalik''. She was director resident at the Canadian Film Centre. Igloolik
Igloolik ( Inuktitut syllabics: , ''Iglulik'', ) is an Inuit hamlet in Foxe Basin, Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut, northern Canada. Because its location on Igloolik Island is close to Melville Peninsula, it is often mistakenly thought to be on the peninsula. The name "Igloolik" means "there is a house here". It derives from meaning house or building, and refers to the sod houses that were originally in the area, not to snow igloos. In Inuktitut the residents are called Iglulingmiut (the suffix ''miut'' means "people of"). Slash/Back
''Slash/Back'' is a 2022 Canadian Inuit science fiction film directed by Nyla Innuksuk in her feature debut from a screenplay by Innuksuk and Ryan Cavan. It premiered at the 2022 South by Southwest Festival in Texas. Cast Production The concept for ''Slash/Back'' was first presented at the 2018 Frontières Co-Pro Market in Montréal, followed by the 2019 Frontières Finance and Packaging Forum in Helsinki and then the Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival, after which point Sierra/Affinity boarded the project as an international distributor. Principal photography took place on location on Baffin Island in summer 2019. It became the first production to film in the Inuit hamlet of Pangnirtung. The area was already experiencing a housing shortage so production flew in fifty beds and set up accommodation for the crews in two local schools.
