Kieran Nugent
Kieran Nugent (1958 – 4 May 2000) was an Irish volunteer in the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and best known for being the first IRA 'blanket man' in the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland. When sentenced to three years for hijacking a bus, Nugent refused to wear a prison uniform and said the prison guards would have to "...nail it to my back". Early life Nugent was an adolescent in Northern Ireland during the most intense years of the Troubles. On 20 March 1973, aged 15, he was standing with a friend on the corner of Merrion Street and Grosvenor Road, when a car pulled up beside them and one of the occupants asked them for directions. Another occupant of the vehicle then opened fire with a submachine gun. Nugent was seriously wounded after being shot eight times in the chest, arms and back by the loyalists in the car. Andrea Nugent (born November 1, 1968) is an RMT and Canadian former competition swimmer who specialized in butterfly and freestyle events. Kevin Patrick Nugent (born 10 April 1969) is an English professional football manager and former player. He is the manager of the Millwall U23 team. Playing career Nugent began his career at Leyton Orient in the 1980s and made over 100 appearances in all competitions for the club, spending time on loan at Cork City during the 1988–89 season. After finishing the 1991–92 season as the club's top scorer, he signed for Plymouth Argyle in March 1992 for a transfer fee of £200,000 and made over 100 appearances for Plymouth. In September 1995, he moved to Bristol City for a fee of £75,000, although first-team opportunities were more limited. Nugent signed for Cardiff City in June 1997 for a transfer fee of £65,000. David Nugent
David James Nugent (born 2 May 1985) is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker and is currently a free agent after leaving Preston North End. He started his career in 2002 when he signed his first professional contract with Bury. He left the club in 2005, when he joined Preston North End for two seasons. Nugent joined Portsmouth in 2007, and later joined Burnley for the 2009–10 season, before returning to Portsmouth for one final season in 2010. He signed for Leicester City in 2011, where he played for the club for four seasons, before joining Middlesbrough in 2015. Cliff Nugent
William Clifford Nugent (3 March 1929 – 17 February 2018) was an English professional footballer. Nugent was playing non-league football for Headington United when Cardiff City manager Cyril Spiers spotted him and brought him to Ninian Park in January 1951. He did not make his debut for the club until the following season, in a 1–0 win over Hull City, but he eventually managed to force his way into the side during the 1953–54 season. He scored his first goal for Cardiff in a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 1954. He helped the club avoid relegation on the final day of the season in the next season but injury ruled him out for all but one game during the 1955-56 campaign, making an incredible return the next year by scoring a hattrick during a 7-0 thrashing of Barnsley. Keith Alexander Nugent FAA (born 28 June 1959) is an Australian physicist. He is Emeritus Professor of Physics at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. He was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of the Australian National University (ANU) from January 2019 to January 2024. Prior to this he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) at La Trobe University, Victoria, and a Laureate Professor of Physics at the University of Melbourne, specialising in X-ray optics and optical physics. He received a first-class honours degree from the University of Adelaide and his PhD from the ANU. Daniel Nugent (1954-1997) was an American anthropologist and professor at the University of Arizona. His most notable works include ''Everyday Forms of State Formation'', a co-edited collection of essays about state formation in modern Mexico and ''Rural Revolt in Mexico: U.S. Intervention and the Domain of Subaltern Politics'', an edited collection of essays about subaltern politics in Mexico. Nugent was also a playwright, and he co-wrote the play ''13 Days/Los Trece Dias: The Zapista Uprising in Chiapas'' which toured nationally from 1996 to 1997. He died in Tucson at the age of 43.
