Nueva Palmira
Nueva Palmira is a city in Colonia Department in south-western Uruguay. Location It is located on the east bank of Uruguay River, about northwest of the departmental capital Colonia del Sacramento. History A "Pueblo" (village) named "Higueritas" was founded here on 26 October 1831 by Felipe Santiago Torres Leiva. Its status was elevated to "Villa" (town) by the Act of Ley Nº 7.257 on 17 August 1920 and then to "Ciudad" (city) by the Act of Ley Nº 11961 on 1 July 1953. The city got its name from the ancient city of Palmira in Syria (Aramaic for City of Date Trees). Population In 2011 Nueva Palmira had a population of 9,857. Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The ''Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. History The first division of the Republic into six departments occurred on 27 January 1816. In February of the same year, two more departments were formed, and in 1828 one more was added. When the First Constitution was signed in 1830, there were nine departments. José Gervasio Artigas
José Gervasio Artigas Arnal (; June 19, 1764 – September 23, 1850) was a political leader, military general, statesman and national hero of Uruguay and the broader Río de la Plata region. He fought in the Latin American wars of independence against the Spanish Empire, but also against the Portuguese Empire and the centralist government of Buenos Aires in the pursuit of political and civil liberties for the peoples of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. Sergio Ramón Rochet Álvarez (born 23 March 1993) is a Uruguayan professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Internacional and the Uruguay national team. Club career Rochet started his career with Danubio with whom he made no appearances. Gianni Bismark Guigou Martínez (born 22 February 1975 in Nueva Palmira) is a Uruguayan former footballer who played as a midfielder. Career He started his career in Nacional, where he played from 1994 to 2000, winning the Uruguayan league titles of 1998 and 2000. He left Nacional to join Serie A club A.S. Roma in 2000 for US$5.8M, where he won the 2000/2001 Scudetto. Guigou left for Siena on loan in summer 2003 and sold to Fiorentina in July 2004 for a nominal fee of €516. In June 2006 he left for newly relegated Serie B side Treviso as part of Massimo Gobbi and Reginaldo's deal. After the club was excluded from professional football in 2009, he was released for free by the federation and later joined Nacional, back in Uruguay. ''Nuestra'' is the debut studio album of the Venezuelan rock band La Vida Bohème, released in August 2010. Recorded and produced by Rudy Pagliuca, it is a free download on the website of the record label All of the Above. The album was nominated for "Best Latin Pop, Rock or Urban Album" in the 54th Grammy Awards. The two singles from this album are "Radio Capital" and "Danz!". Soriano () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Mercedes. It is located on the west of the country, south of Río Negro Department, north of Colonia Department and west of Flores Department. Uruguay's calling code is +598. Since 2010, national long distance calling was eliminated, thus there are no area codes in each city. Landline telephony ANTEL (Spanish abbreviation for National Administration of Telecommunications) is Uruguay's state-owned company for telecommunications. Previously in Uruguay, phone numbers used to have between 4 and 7 digits. To make a local phone call, you only had to dial those digits. To make a call between two cities from different departments, you had to dial zero, plus area code, plus phone number.
