The Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Alphonsus ( es, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro y San Alfonso), popularly known as Iglesia de Tapes (due to its location on the Tapes Street, in the neighbourhood of Bella Vista) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Montevideo, Uruguay. History The temple was built between 1896 and 1899 in Neo-Romanesque style, inspired by a German church from Aachen. The temple is dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and saint Alphonsus. Inside there is a wonderful Walcker organ from 1927. The parish was established on 17 November 1955. Alphonsus Liguori, CSsR (27 September 1696 – 1 August 1787), sometimes called Alphonsus Maria de Liguori or Saint Alphonsus Liguori, was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, composer, musician, artist, poet, lawyer, scholastic philosopher, and theologian. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as the Redemptorists, in November 1732. In 1762 he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti. A prolific writer, he published nine editions of his ''Moral Theology'' in his lifetime, in addition to other devotional and ascetic works and letters. Among his best known works are ''The Glories of Mary'' and ''The Way of the Cross'', the latter still used in parishes during Lenten devotions. Juana Fernández Morales de Ibarbourou, also known as Juana de América, (March 8, 1892 – July 15, 1979) was a Uruguayan poet and one of the most popular poets of Spanish America. Her poetry, the earliest of which is often highly erotic, is notable for her identification of her feelings with nature around her. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. Biography She was born Juana Fernández Morales on March 8, 1892, in Melo, Cerro Largo, Uruguay. The date of Juana's birth is often given as March 8, 1895, but according to a local state civil registry signed by two witnesses, the year was actually 1892. Juana began studies at the José Pedro Varela school in 1899 and moved to a religious school the following year, and two public schools afterwards. Paul Walcker
Paul Walcker (May 31, 1846 – June 6, 1928 ) was a German pipe organ builder. Biography Born in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, he was a son of the notable organ builder Eberhard Friedrich Walcker (1794-1872) and his second wife Marie Stumpp. He studied musical style and architecture at the University of Stuttgart. In 1864, he apprenticed with his father and worked on the organs of the Reformed Churches in Mulhouse, France and Glarus, Switzerland, as well as the German Reformed Church in Saint Petersburg, Russia. In 1886, Walcker and his four brothers Eberhard Heinrich (1828-1903), Friedrich (1829-1895), Karl (1845-1908) and Eberhard (1850-1928) founded the Ludwigsburg Organ Company. An argument in 1892 with the Wilhelm Sauer Organ Company required the mediation of Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg. Our Lady Of Perpetual Help
Our Lady of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour) is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with a 15th-century Byzantine icon with an alleged Marian apparition. The icon is believed to have originated from the Keras Kardiotissas Monastery and has been in Rome since 1499. Today it is permanently enshrined in the Church of Saint Alphonse of Liguori, where the official Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help text is prayed weekly.
